Radio Shack RXT6 aka Shure M111E

Hi everyone. I found this thread a few days back, really interesting. An M111HE cart, sans stylus, should be on its way to me from someone who wasn't using it. I was wondering as of NOW, that is 2009 since this thread seems to have petered out a year or so back, what the least expensive, but still decent, stylus that will fit it is. I prefer EU over US sellers, if that helps.

I suppose a genuine M92E could be a good candidate? I used to have a '92 and it wasn't a bad cart, tracked well from what I remember, but there was a 'nasalness' to the sound that drove me away. Does anyone know whether fitting an M92E stylus to this cart would result in that same kind of sound?

Looking forward to your ideas. Thanks!

I hope you didn't pay that much, because the stylus is what determines the quality of the cartridge; the cartridge bodies are all the same. So putting in an N92E stylus makes it an M92E. The N104E at JICO is the best, low cost stylus for this--better than the N92E.

Nope, didn't pay a dime - as I said, it was given to me. That's 'E' and not 'HE', right? Just checking.

Thanks.

Edit: Jico have really been jacking up their prices, haven't they?

The earlier version of the M75 (CS?) with the clip-on mount can accomodate a whole bunch of styli... I think there was a thread here? I found out about the N91xx stylus (ie., that it fit) myself, but then saw pictures of like a dozen different styli fitted to it (all Shures, of course) ... it's probably the closest thing to a 'universal Shure body' there is.

Actually, almost all the M carts were technically universal. The M75 and M91 series used a smaller cartridge body, but yes there were several styli that fit. Beginning with the M95 and including all the M97 variants and all the p-mounts they used a larger body style. (We're not talking about V15 here). The bodies are the same internally and the same shape externally--the only thing that limits what stylus will fit is the plastic parts. The styli differed in stylus dimension, cantilever construction, and the housing, including flip down protectors and brushes. The styli determined the quality, specs, and properties of the cartridge.

Including the M44 and 55? I've tried styli for the M7x in those and the cantilevers always stuck out at a weird angle... I'd love to fit something more delicate than the stock N44xx and 55 styli to the M44/55 bodies. They're killer cartridges, sound-wise.

The new shures styluses are all made in Mexico and don't sound as good as there old ones right?
And how good are the m75's compaired to the lower end at's?

Yes, they're made in Mexico. Some don't think they sound as good as the old ones, but there are still plenty of folks satisfied with the new ones.

Different sonics, but the same quality, depending, of course, on the stylus used.

Never worked with either, so not sure what the interchangeability is there. They are the older than the M75 and 91.

I know for a fact the n91ed fits on my m75, would this be a upgrade over my at71e?
Or should i just a get NOS .0003 x .0007 n75 elipitical?

The original N75ED Type 2 was .2 x .7 mil, the N75EJ Type 2 was .4 x .7 mil. The .3 x .7 styli are aftermarket. The AT71E is .4 x .7. So an ED would be an upgrade.
Howard,

Were the -ED styli nude mounted? I have a NOS N91ED and I did look at it under the 'scope, but that was years ago. I do remember that the diamond was a salmon-ish pink hue and looked gorgeous :) but not that.

Yes, I believe ED stood for elliptical nude.
