Radio Station Formats.....

I was playing around with my girlfriends tuner last Sunday. I dialed in a station that was playing the Blues. I thought how great. Next was Reggea (sp). Then Dr. John, Savory Brown, Wings, Zevon, Cash, Waters, Wolf, James Brown, James Gang, Sheryl Crow, Flim & the BB's,Son House, Walsh, and many others.

The station stops playing music once an hour. Top of the hour to give their call letters and numbers.

It seems a local owns this station for his own personal pleasure.

It is only a 1k station.

They do jam though.

Anyway, in their license app they say they play " Urban Oldies".

Sounds great to me.

Any of you have such a station close by? Many of you "OLD" folks would kill to hear all of the great music.

I would suggest you look at AM Radio for " Urban Oldies" and enjoy the format.

I wish I hadn't sold my reel to reel.

Regards,

Joe

Radio - what's a radio? Honestly, I don't know the last time I used the tuner in my main rig.

But that station sounds very cool. The closest thing I've found to what you are describing is a Public Radio Station out of Philadelphia, PA - WXPN.org. A friend in Philly turned me on to it. I listen via the internet at work. They play a lot of blues, new indie stuff, jazz (Pat Metheny etc.), Gillian Welch, an occasional Nickel Creek bluegrass tune. It's a very good station, if you can access it via the internet.

Hope you live near that station, with only 1,000 watts. I'd get to know the owner. Sounds like a cool guy to hang out with, having a station "for his own pleasure".

He runs the station off of computers. His goal is to play an "Old Song" only once a year. I'm listening to Jerry Lee this moment. Now, Elton, " Rocket Man", no ads.....perfect radio.

Joe

Sounds like a great place to hang out and enjoy without a local car dealership advert every 10 minutes!
I am in the self proclaimed "Music Capital Of The World"(so they say?).
The Radio Stations here are as bad as corporate Radio can be.
Oh,yeah there trying these new scamming formats where they announce the suits are out of town and you are in charge tell us what you wanna hear.Crap like that.
One station here has been playing the same Zep and Doors tunes for well over 25 years.Another has an idiotic person who is a Howard Stern waanabe and everyone jus' loves him :yuck:
As fas as I am concerned Real Radio with Real DJ personalities died in the 70's!
