It's hard to say for sure what that cabinet is from the pic, hard to get a size perspective to determin if it's 9849 monitor sized or 846 valencia sized. Either way if there's a pair thay're a steal at that price.

The size and the shape of the front cover looks like Altec Madrids. But the numbers do not match the Madrids that I own.

Here's a service parts sheet listing the 872B Madrid. It uses the 420 biflex in the 15 or 16 inch frame, the latter being the more desireable to most altec enthusiasts.

You'll probably not be overwhelmed with the sound, as there is no HF reproducer (tweeter) in this model.

IMO they're still well worth the asking price just for the raw 420 drivers as they can be reconed to 416 woofers by GPA.

FWIW, you could install the correct tweeters and network and effectively make them a "Santana", but these still fall short of the "magic" you'll see many of us refer to when posting about the classic big altec 2 way sound.

I'm waiting to get an answer on the phone to go audition them (and check out the drivers!) I don't think the # she posted on CL was a typo, I think she just didn't see the B clearly....You know how it is, bending over the back end of a speaker, wishing you had a light....

...Spoke to the Mother just now. Have a tentative plan to call again before leaving work so I can stop by and look at them. We'll see if it pans out. Anything to look for? Do the grills come off? Wish me luck!

...Phone was ringing while I was there for them....Short squat beasts...real nice shape, only one corner ding, prolly a 8.5 to 9 out of 10. I could swear there's a small tweeter above the big recessed woofer...I'll post pix either tonight or tomorow....

It's entirely possible they have a tweeter, i just assumed that since in the service sheet there is no network listed that they didn't have any HF reproducer. The santana's list a dividing network. Interestingly, the cabinet dimensions are also nearly identical between the the santana and madrid, they may differ only in cabinet style or vintage.

Here's the pix...

The tweeter is definitely putting out high freq., but it's much quieter than the big driver. The woofers are in absolutely mint condition. The thing in worst shape are the plastic struts under the grill that give them those bulges. They're peeling the black paint, and they have cracked due to age and heat. They sound reasonable, but I need to compare them to my Chorus I's and Forte II's to see if I'm going to keep them. It's entirely possible I may sell the drivers and keep the cabinets. They don't make them like this anymore....:thmbsp:
