Rare and Seldom Seen Speakers

Platinum Audio Quattro. Don't see many of them around. Now part of my B stereo system.

Very nice. I have the platinum audio solo's and think they are very impressive for their size, i could only imagine what those must sound like.

Yeah, they're impressive but a tad bit on the harsh side for the HF. These on the other hand are verrrrry smooth:

I guess my speakers in my main system and. Intl system both are fairly rare. Very few Dynaudio Geminis or Bozak B-3001s out there from what I've seen.

Not to too rare but a pair of Vandersteen Threes in the brown grill cloth. Cats on audio gear thread if you want a pic.

Pair of DCM Time Window Squared serial 617, 618.

I'm not sure about the specifications but from what I have gathered these are nominal 12 ohm, transmission line design with twin 8" woofers in the bass units and twin concentric mid/tweets in the head units.

The crossover incorporates a "sound stage shaping" circuit. The controls on the back of the head unit are labled High Frequency Dispersion, Mid Frequency Dispersion and Tweeter Level.

Wish I could but the grills on the bass units are attached with tiny black finishing nails and the head unit grills have no visible attachment thus must be secured from the inside.

A high powered LED light can reveal the bass drivers through the grills but the drivers in the head units have a three flap "curtain" in front of them.

I'll have to upload some of my pics, but here is a short list of what i have that I don't see often.

1) Epicure 1000 towers
2) Epicure M602's
3) ESS Translinear
4) B&W Matrix *original model, however I can't seem to find anything on them*

Had some ol' Sony SSU 4000's that were really interesting.

Some really nice speakers on this thread, all quite unique in their own ways.

I have a couple of pairs, not quite as rare, but they have not been posted here, and are ones I use everyday without any problems.

Phase Linear III's released in 1976 as Phase Linear Andromeda's and name changed due to legal infringement on the name Andromeda's, designed by Bob Carver. Consist of a two panels and a bass commode with twin down firing 12 mass loaded drivers, each driver is on is own seperate channel so two channel. I have both pairs the orginal Andromeda's and the III's, they also have a speaker controller which goes between the preamp and the amp, which allows for increasing and decreasing the bass, mids, and hi drivers levels and a spatial control for blending the channels to add aura to space of the stero image. They retailed new for right at 2,400 dollars.

Another pair that I rarely see are a Japanese pair of Sansui SP L700's. Sansui was the Asian sole distrubutor for JBL in the mid 70's and JBL was very popular both here and in Asia. Sansui basically made their idea of a JBL speaker, complete with acustical lens and a cabinet design like some of the older JBL's. Very good overall quality made speakers, bi ampable and were quite expensive at the time of the release, from a Japanese site I read something near 200,000 yens, around 2,000 USD. They are quite heavy, very well braced inside both on the from panels and side panels, around 80 pounds. They orginally came with castors on the bottom for rolling them around.

I have (and love) a pair of Sansui LM-330's. Just a simple 2-way design, probably modeled after JBL L-88's. Very robust construction, and superb sound. These completely changed my perception of paper cone tweeters.

I don't know how "rare" they are, but I've not seen any others (that I recall) on AK.

These are two sets of speakers I currently have that I think one of them is fairly rare:

The little speakers on top are Admiral Tunnel Reflex speakers, and the bottom ones (the rare ones) are IMF TLS 50 II's.

DSCN0527.jpg Have never seen another of these. Made by Scott out of MD. They were sued by HH Scott and changed the name to Ravenswood. I have these setup with my HH Scott 299-D, and they sound OK. They look cooler then they sound.

Ken Boyd: your Phase Linear lll's are a very interesting design which I never saw. Thanks for posting the pictures. This is an inspiring design and I assume they can play at high output levels for an open baffle speaker? Can you comment further on them? Any comparisons to other panel or open baffle speakers would be of interest. Would you happen to have a copy of the crossover? I am keen to know how the four up firing mid tweeters sound both on and off axis? I assume that this is a loudspeaker which likes to see lots of open space behind? Ar the two mid driver in phase or out of phase with each other? Thanks again for the pictures. Best regards Moray James.
