I've never seen one of these before. Kinda cool looking. Not mine.

This is Vintage Bose Spatial Control Reciever.

I doubt you will ever see another like it, They were only built for 3 years,
And were built specifically to drive the Bose 901 Direct Reflecting Speakers.
With this amp you do not need to hook up the equalizer that is standard equipment with the Bose 901's.

I passed on one at the flea market for $25 about four months ago. It is on our list of 100+ receivers. It does have the built in processor for the 901s and is reported to have some real guts.
 
I have listened to one that was hooked up to a set of 901's series 2 or 3 I don't remember and it sounded pretty good to me. Yes it did have some balls as well.
 
I passed on one at the local thrift store for $50. I took a Pioneer SX-1250 home instead that same night. Went back the other day to get the Bose but it was already gone.

I passed on one locally, also. I don't have a pair of 901.

I wonder what series it was designed around?
 
The unit was around when the Series IV was in production. The case is real wood and the equalizer can be defeated to use the receiver with real speakers. Didn't do to well being dropped on top of a Luxman R-1070 in the sound room, but it did fall about 7 feet with the Lux about 3 feet down from the top of the fall. It has to have guts to power the 901s, and it does.

That is not only a cool looking receiver, but a very well built one as well. I have one at my workplace that you would think is the normal unimpressive bose kinda stuff, but its actually built like a tank on the inside. I don't know who was building their amps and receivers for them but they did a pretty damn good job.
 
The "spatial" part of the design requires 3 conductors per speaker instead of the standard two. 901's have that third terminal marked Z or X or something, and there's a corresponding terminal on the receiver. Each speaker is wired with 4 drivers on the right rear together, and four drivers on the left rear together. I don't remember how the front driver is tied in. Never really heard 901's wired this way. And I think it's been mentioned here, that you don't need a bose EQ if you use this receiver.

From reading this thread, quite a few AKers have run across this "Rare Bird".

I too saw one of these and I passed on it as well. I must say that I was not offered the Bose for flea market or thrift store prices otherwise I would have bought it.

yes! The bose amps are cool. Check out the bose 1801. Huge power supply, 400wpc into 4 ohms. Its a heavy sucker too.
