Raspberry Pi and WiFi..... issues

If you are in the squeezebox world why not try squeezelite? It is a squeezebox emulator and plays great. Many tutorials on how to set it up. It is easy to do and sounds better than a squeezebox. My SB3 and Duet have given up the ghost a long time ago.

Speaking of MAME I use the retropie image on my RPi to play games. I added squeezelite to it and now it plays music too. It also has Kodi built in if you are into video. Rock solid!!

You guys are ahead of me. I burned volumio to an SD card and fired her up. I couldn't even get volumio.local to work via ethernet. I did see the volumio hotspot on my Wi-Fi though. I seem to have a DNS issue. Oh well.
Honestly, I hate the squeezelite interface. Something about the UI just bothers me. It's a petty personal thing over a product that actually works quite well. My only real gripe with it is that when I add new music to my library and scan for new files, it often pulls albums that I've added years ago, that haven't been touched, etc. Sometimes I wonder if it's actually cataloguing my collection correctly. I thought I'd read that was a known issue, to clear the library and start fresh once in a while, but that's too time-consuming.

I originally bought my Pi to play MAME. I have a ginormous ROM set and did all the tricks of checking my ROMs against my build. I was a bit disappointed in what games were available and how they worked. I found many to be glitchy. I've thought hard about getting a small form factor PC instead with a better graphics card/chip and going that route. That experience caused me to shelve the Pi for a year until this December when my wife asked me what I wanted for my Bday. I opted for the HiFiBerry Dac+ to monkey around with. I'm sure MAME functionality is better now than it was then and will continue to get fixes, etc. The nice thing about a Pi is that you just need a micro-SD card which means you can swap OS/images quite easily!

I may run an HDMI cable to my TV downstairs for album artwork. I hadn't thought about KODI.

I can't get volumio.local to work either but using the IP address seems to work fine. Is there a way to sync the IP and just have it symlink to volumio.local?

There is no squeezelite interface as it is headless. You must mean the LMS interface which I grant is old looking but still works well. They have recently added Chromecast Audio plugins to it. I use the Squeeze Commander app on my smartphone and tablet. That becomes the interface. It hasn't been updated in years and most people have moved on to Orange Squeeze. Of course you can use LMS from any browser on the same network too.

I am just wondering if you are using the term MAME to mean all the old games that a Pi can emulate or just the older coin operated arcade games. In retropie MAME is just the coin operated arcade games. Retropie can also emulate the original home consoles like nintendo. genesis, atari, etc. I just set up retropie to show my kids what the original games looked like. They were amazed but not impressed.

Yep, LMS interface. It blows.

Yes, by MAME, I mean the Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator. Coin-up. I never got into NESter or any of the home console emulators. Now, coin-up? Give me some Black Tiger, NBA Jam, Gauntlet and 1942!

I had a giftcard so I just got a Raspbery Pi 3 B (Media Center) from Microcenter ...
also just ordered the "HiFiBerry Digi+Pro" add-on card from Germany.
I have a non-NAS multidrive case - but I will look to tie that or a NAS to it ...

Intrigued by the possibilities!

I'm a bit late to this thread, but I noticed that on the JRiver forum for the ID there is this

Known Issues
Wired network connections are recommended. If you do use a wireless connection, it must be configured from the Id Pi in GUI mode. There is a bug in the text based wireless configuration at this time.

So, I would try the inbuilt wifi and configure via the GUI. I would also look for support via the JRiver forums.

If you intend to run in headless mode I would recommend using a static IP for the Pi3 as it removes the possibility of the IP changing, which can be a pain in the butt when trying to SSH in.
