Just heard the sad news that Raul Malo, the leader of the American band, The Mavericks has passed away today from cancer. Lucky enough to have seen them twice in concert, they were a band that to me, defined Americana music. Latin, Texas twang, R&B, Oldies. Country & Rock were all part of their immense repertoire. Raul Malo was one of my 5 favorite male vocalists of any genre. This one hurts, I will be sure to be cranking up some Mavericks tonight in his honor. Requiescat In Pace.

Way back in better days, I was a youth, working a board shift at a local country radio station.

I cued up a new track from a group called The Mavericks. "This Broken Heart". 2 minutes in, I was entranced.

RIP, Mr. Malo. You made the world a prettier place.
 
This is so tragic.

When they would hit Northern California, my wife and I would plan driving trips so we could catch multiple shows. Damn, didn't realize it's been 3 years.

I kept waiting for a miracle.
 
I've seen The Mavericks multiple times, often times travelling a good distance to see the show. Never disappointed in any of their shows! I often remarked "If you come to a Mavericks show in a bad mood, and don't leave in a better mood, check into a hospital". His voice was angelic, and I have an album he did totally in Spanish, and even though I didn't understand a word, it's still one of my favorites! His voice to me was comparable to Roy Orbison.

Once I heard he had checked back into the hospital, I was fearing the worst! Sadly, I was right! Rest easy, Raul, you will be missed!
 
Sad, indeed - I really liked the Mavericks' music - am now listening to 'What a Crying Shame'.... Never got to see them live...

Indeed, very sad news about the oh-so-talented Raul Malo of The Mavericks, a band that could do it all and a singer who could lead the way.

One of my favorite albums is ‘Music for all Occasions’, so many good tracks, and that voice!

God bless, Mr. Malo. A nice obit for him on NPR today, by Felix Contrares.
 
I started to listen to The Mavericks in 1994 right after "What A Crying Shame" hit the airwaves.

I was introduced to them by a friend of mine. She was enamored with Raul Malo's voice and the genre of the album.

I've seen them in concert 4 times. They never failed to put on a great show. I remember leaving each show I attended feeling much better than when I entered the venue.

The all-Spanish album, En Espanol, was released in 2020 and is a favorite of mine.

Rest in peace, Raul. You and your music will be missed.
