RCA's Tape Magazine

I actually own one of these player--a "portable" unit that weighs nearly 30 lbs. Nice SE 6V6 amp with a 6CG7 and two 12AX7. Picked it up at a reuse/thrift store after puzzling over what the heck it was. Very, very robust tape mechanism--heavy duty copper and steel parts. Way, way overbuilt. But without tape cartidges sits around the house as a curiousity.

The original "cassette" - although the term didn't exist back then. (Well, for tape anyway - it's french for "little box".)

It was a big flop, along with other magazine-type systems, including Wollensak/Revere's. Philips' genius was taking that concept and reducing it in size and cost at just the right time.
