"The transaction is contingent upon Rdio seeking protection in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of California. Upon approval of the proposed transaction by the bankruptcy court, Rdio will be winding down the Rdio-branded service in all markets. Pandora is not acquiring the operating business of Rdio, and is acquiring the technology and talent to accelerate its own business strategy. The transaction is subject to the approval of the Bankruptcy Court, which will supervise an auction for the assets of Rdio, as well as other customary closing conditions."

Yikes. All I can say at this point is well...****! Rdio is/was my go to service and one of if not the best on-demand music services. Tough business.

First MOG, now Rdio. Even in our gee-whiz digital internets age, the old, stodgy laws of economics still apply. Who knew?

So Pandora wants to be the BIG FISH in the streaming music pond. All well and good, my experiences with them have been basically good. But the one thing that Rdio got *right* was the sound. 320K AAC+ is a step above 320K MP3, and a small (technically indiscernible) step below 16/44.1. Right now Pandora One is either 192K or 256K, I believe the former. So Pandora needs to invest in as high quality as possible, or they will not have me as a customer.

As I posted in another thread yesterday...there was an "off the cuff" quip from and Rdio staffer about Pandora going on-demand. That's a pretty solid bet. It's the only reason that they'd pony up for Rdio's kit.

On Pandora's website their press release they are looking at expanding their listening service by late 2016. Uh, I guess I'll be shopping around then, rather than waiting out the next year with no high bitrate streaming.
 
Well, today was my bill cycle day. :bye: Rdio as I knew it.

Interesting transitional morph on my service. The mobile version has regressed to stations only. The desktop however is fully functional with access to all my playlists, favorites, and any complete album and tracks on-demand. Hell, the remote control from iOS still works! There are two caveats...the bitrate was reduced to 192k and there are ads about every 3-4 tracks. Hmmm... reckon I'll be keeping it around for a great free background/party/discovery tool until they pull the plug on the servers. :confused:
