RDIO now streaming 320K!!!

Rdio has finally updated their library! Goodbye Spotify, it was nice while it lasted. Rdio is my favorite service and in some ways I prefer it to MOG. The only thing that was lacking was 320k and they fixed that today.:thmbsp:

Of course, Tidal should be around soon, so I am not sure how long I will stick with Rdio. I plan to do some comparisons when the time comes.

http://blog.rdio.com/us/2014/10/introducing-high-quality-aac-audio-across-the-globe.html

"Today we’re happy to announce we’ve converted our entire catalog of over 30 million songs to high-quality AAC audio. Listeners around the world now have four sound quality settings to choose from across iOS, Android, and the web. All Rdio users can choose between data-efficient 64 kbps all the way up to 192 kbps. Rdio Unlimited subscribers now also have the option of listening in pristine-quality 320 kbps. Plus individually select your audio settings for a variety of uses, whether you’re using Wi-Fi or cellular streaming or listening to offline downloads.

Our commitment to sound quality also deepens today with our partnership with Bob Weir, the legendary founding member of the Grateful Dead and champion of Musicians for Audio Quality Initiative. To celebrate this milestone, we’re releasing an exclusive catalog of Bob Weir tracks recorded at the Tamalpais Research Institute (TRI Studios), his state of the art studio in Marin County, CA. The catalog features Weir as well as musicians like Dave Schools, Sammy Hagar, and many others"

Sweet! Thanks for the update, may need to check them out again. They have the best in-Sonos UI.

Their UI is the best on iOS, as well, and has features no one else has. Their Artist radio is the closest thing to MOG I have run across. I have been using both Spotify and Rdio, so this will save me $10 a month. Of course, Tidal may claim that unspent money...we shall see.:thmbsp:

Well, I frankly couldn't hear the difference between Deezer FLAC and 320k MP3. AAC measures a bit better than MP3, so would be even closer to Deezer / Tidal quality. Deezer Elite is 1/2 the price of Tidal, at $120/year. Decisions, decisions.

Stereophile published a comparison a while back. The residual noise of 320 AAC is WAY down in the mud, -120db in the audible range for geezers, so should be indistinguishable from FLAC. Trust me, the same graph for LPs would look ridiculously worse than even MP3. Not that I don't love my LPs. ;)

Thanks for the link. For me, I will need to hear a noticible difference between the two services to switch. Of course, if Tidal does everything I can do with Rdio ( I listed those features elsewhere*), I might switch just for piece of mind.

I bet I would have to give up features, though.

* I decided to edit this to include the features I mentioned elsewhere:

"The main reason is that it has nearly every feature I want. My main requirements are below:

1. Needs to have an iPad app and Desktop app
2. Needs to continue playing similar artist after I play an album rather than just shutting off (really important because I listen at work and usually like to start with an album)
3. Needs artist radio and a decent recommendation process
4. Needs easy access to New Releases
5. Needs to be a good looking, easy to control, interface on iOS (since that is how I will mainly listen to it)
6. Needs to be able to recommend similar artists
7. Needs to be able to work properly with Bluetooth in my car (showing album covers and showing new songs names on the display)
8. ability to "play later" without creating playlist.
9. List of albums and/or songs in queue
10 320k files"

Does anyone know if you can stream 320 with the desktop app or do you have to get the multi device plan?

If you are paying for a subscription, you will get it on desktops. Be aware that I had to go into my user settings and the "advanced" window to change my audio from 192 to 320k. I also had to manually change my iOS app, if I remember correctly.

It appears that these settings changed all other similar implementations, but I will look at it on each new device to be sure.

Rdio looks tempting. Do they happen to have a reliable remote app for iPhone/Android? I like to use an old 2008 Macbook as my source.

Once you start playing Rdio on the Mac, you simply start the Rdio app on the iPhone ( probably works the same on Andriod, but I don't know for sure) and control it directly from the app. There is a button that comes up that says "start playing here" if you want to move the audio back to the phone.

Oh, nice. Can you control playlists remotely from the app by any chance?

Thanks.

I believe you have all of the same controls that you have if you are just using the app to play on the phone. I let Rdio come up with playlists for me, so I don't use the feature very often. However, you simply hold your finger down on the song or album and it will pop up a menu to allow you to add it to a playlist or create a new playlist (as well as a few more options).

Wow. What a deal for $10 a month. I was using the Remoteless app for Spotify, but it was very buggy. Plus Rdio seems to have the whole Lennon catalog, which Spotify doesn't seem to have.

Thanks.

Great to hear that you like it. I'm a big fan of Rdio.

I also have Remoteless and it is not in the same ballpark. Spotify talked about adding Spotify Connect to the desktop, but they still haven't gotten around to it. Spotify Connect does work for controlling one iOS device with another, but Rdio does that, as well.:thmbsp:

Signed up for another month, UI is even better than I remember it. One feature I don't think any other service has is ability to set up stations on record labels. I've set up Savoy Jazz and Jazz Factory so far, couldn't find the right Pacific Jazz, looking for other labels to add.

Also the ability to start a similar playlist automatically after an album finishes. Cool beans.

Yes.

Also one nice feature I like and use quite a bit is the Shazam integration. Link it to your rdio account and it will generate an ongoing playlist of songs you have "shazamed" (heard elsewhere). :thmbsp:

Also 2-- you may get a kick out of this rdio trick-->Boil the Frog :thmbsp::thmbsp:

I love the continue play feature, but I was unaware of the labels. It isn't obvious in the iOS app, but I added Verve, so I got it sorted out.:thmbsp:

I linked mine to Shazam. Pretty cool.

man this particular rdio "radio" feature sounds so six months ago familiar to me.

hmmm?...Oh yeah, here's why.

Rekon it was just too deep to fathom for non users at the moment. And/Or it simply got the "bitrate bum rush". ;)

In any event, glad the sun has finally risen over the horizon for yous.

Aye...the Shazam dealio is pretty awesome. It's priceless for logging your out & about discoveries.
