Re-cap JBL L100T

Short of getting a L100t3 crossover and using that I wonder if this would be would provide any improvement.

If I only changed the HF circuit in the stock L100t Xover to L100t3 (change 3uF cap~~> 4 uF and the resistor from 1.2ohm~~>2.4ohm) would this alone make the highs better.
These are the only 2 differences in the HF circuit of the L100t vs L100t3. (as far as I can see)

(I already am using the 035tia tweeter but some consider it the same as the 035t.)
Also recap the other original values of stock L100t caps.

I mean to me they sound pretty dam good as is for 50 year old ears but I would think the caps are probably in need of replacement.. Thanks.

Has anyone re-capped their original L100t xovers?

The L100t3 xovers are somewhat hard to find on ebay and it doesn't look like a simple swap in caps/resistors will work because the inductors are different.

Surely someone has some experience here.
I also posted on Lansing forum but got no responses as of yet.
 
Yep, been down that road. Ultimately I found some T3 xovers on ebay and didn't try to rebuild the ones out of my T's. Here's a thread I started on it and one AKer's recommendations on gettting the T xover to T3 specs. The T3 xovers did improve the overall sound of the T's noticeably, but now that I have had many other sets of very fine speakers I find the lacking midrange of the T/T3's to be frustrating to listen to.

I would not feel comfortable rebuilding the entire xover with new inductors (lack of experience). I also don't want to spend a lot of money on them.

Fwiw did you replace the old caps with new on those t3 xovers or use them as is? If so what brand caps did you use?

I would assume that even putting new caps in the t xovers would show some improvement overall also.
 
I did not recap the T3 xovers...just stuck em in and let her rip. I did one and A/B'd it against the other speaker by panning between L and R channels and setting the pre to "mono" and I could certainly hear an improvement. Top end became less shrill and had better detail, midrange became less "nasally" and bottom end more controlled and punchy. One day I may replace the caps, but I doubt it will bring that deficient midrange up to the level I'd like it to. There are several here on AK that seem to have the same issue with T/T3's midrange. But, I probably shouldn't write the JBL's off 'til I replace the caps. Still probably my favorite bass reproduction of all my speakers.

You know, many knowledgeable JBL fans believe the 10-inch monitors outperform the 12-inch monitors (4410 vs. 4412 for instance). I don't find any such deficiency in my L80Ts that have been "upgraded" with T3 crossovers. :dunno:

But I also do not have that complaint on my 4412As, either. Are you sure the problem isn't an overpowering woofer rather than a lack of mid-range? Does the 128H-1 perhaps provide better balance than the 2214H-1?

Interesting :scratch2:. Did you also just swap the xovers w/o recapping or did you recap beforehand?
From my understanding this is the same xover as 100's.

Hmm, good point. Well, whatever the culprit is....weak mid or overpowering woofer, there is an imbalance there that causes the mid range to suffer.
