Re-foaming RS 4b speakers

I recently picked up a nice pair of Infinity RS 4b speakers. They're in great shape but the woofers need re-foamed. I'd like to be able to put the new surrounds on without having to remove the dust covers and shim the voice coil. I've read about running a tone sequence through them and also about using a battery to center the coil. Would anyone care to elaborate about these methods or suggest an alternative? I'd also like to check the drivers before installing the surrounds. Does anyone know what the ohm reading should be on a properly functioning RS 4b woofer? Thanks in advance.

do a search on AK using Google about refoaming, test tones, shimming, and you'll get a ton of threads detailing folks methods.

To test the DC voice coil resistance, you'll need to take the drivers out of the cabinets to get at the terminals. Having the drivers out of the cabinet makes it a lot easier, IMO, to do the surrounds though. Just take careful pics, mark the wires and terminals, and install in reverse. If you search the infinity website, or google, you'll find the RS4B tech sheet, which shows the wiring and ohm values for the drivers. They should be generally within 10% of each other.

Not really much different than my RS 4001s discussed here: http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=261274

I used Rick Cobb's kits and tone CD and it worked perfectly.

I used Simply Speakers foam surrounds. I think if you go to their website they have a simple walk through about refoaming and they include an instruction sheet with new surrounds. I've done it many times on several speaker sets including my RS4's and my Kappa 8's. all done by feel without shims. I've had excellent results. I also like their glue.

I used Rick Cobb's kits and tone CD on my RS4b's, worked very well and they sound awesome.
