I picked up a pair of Minimus 26s at Salvation Army over the weekend, for the $5 it seemed worth the gamble and they appeared to be in good shape. The timing worked out well as I needed a smaller set to test out my recently cleaned up Pioneer SX-434 which will eventually be connected to a set of Realistic 8Bs that may have their own issues (we'll save that for another thread).
Got everything hooked up and they sounded great. Just had the FM jamming and I was really pleased as I ran through checking the bass, treble, balance, etc knobs on the receiver. All good.
Those little 26s put out a big sound as Tom Petty came on and I decided it was time to turn it up a bit. Got the volume up around ¾ of the way and they were pumping, sound was good and then suddenly the right woofer stopped. I turned it back down, played with the balance, tweeter was still doing its thing, and the left speaker still great. When I put my hand gently on the woofer it acted like it wanted to come back in, but just wouldn't go.
I don't know what these speakers' life was like before this, but all told this was maybe 5 to 10 minutes of run time total, mostly at low volume. The 26s are rated at 40 watts and the SX-434 is about 15wpc and was only turned up loud for a minute tops. Doesn't seem likely that would blow the speaker. There was no distortion, buzz, hum, etc.
I pulled the woofer out just to peak, everything appears to be in good shape, but admittedly I know little about speakers or what might cause such a thing. As such, I appreciate any leads, input, and/or advice.
