Thanks in advance for any and all replies here. I purchased a pair of Nova 7 speakers and committed the unforgiveable sin of listening but not asking for both grills to be removed. So I got home and quickly found one stock Realistic 4ohm tweeter (or maybe I should say stock looking, should they be 8ohm?) and one phenolic ring Taiwan special. So I made the command decision to buy new, matching (of course) phenolic ring tweeters from the Express with Parts. Same dimensions as stock, I should be good to go. Of course, I got excited prematurely because once I removed the mismatched tweeters and got ready to test fit the new tweets, I immediately realized the mounting holes are not the same size. So this leads me here and to the following questions:
Should I
1) ignore the stock holes and remove and save for later the metal guides from behind the baffle and use wood screws to mount the phenolic tweeters?
2) carefully drill the appropriate size holes in the proper space and re-use mounting whatever you call thems?
3) spend more money and try to find the proper stock paper cone Realistic tweeters on ebay (I passed on a pair with the plastic inner domes or spacers or whatever you call the reverse horns that protrude into the cabinet for only $39.95 and now they are gone.......I know but it should already be fairly apparent I am a moron) and save the PE tweeters for a future project?
One last question that might not be necessary but I am curious anyway.....when mounting phenolic ring tweeters is there a sonic reason or merely an aesthetic one for the posts being at 6 o'clock? Would it change the imaging or anything to mount them at 9 or 12 or 3 or 7:19? I have never owned a pair of speakers with tweeters like these so I am curious to hear them, but maybe this isn't the right project.
In closing these are 10 foot speakers......they will look good when I am done from 10 feet but they will not be museum quality so keeping them original won't make much of a difference if I ever sell them (and I already retrofitted decent banana jacks on the crossover board so they can't be bone stock again no matter what) unless I find a real purist or I decide to re-laminate them. Which means if I decide to pay someone who knows how to do that to do it and that would be insane on a $70 pair of speakers. Once again, thanks in advance. Time for Howard's on the cabinets while I await your replies. I already recapped the crossovers with Nichicon capacitors. I hope they are decent. Haven't ever used them but they say "audiophile grade" on the website so they must be great, right? Hahahahaha.
