Realistic Optimus T-100s: Opinions?

I had a set of the T-100 a while back that were a thrift store find. Both tweeters were bad, easy fix. The two 8 inch drivers had no gasket on the back and leaked air. Nothing that could be called a crossover. I sealed the drivers put in Pioneer cone tweeters and made a simple crossover. They were great looking and sounded fine for what they were. A guy who sells used junk needed some speakers for a newer plastic pioneer system he was trying to sell so I traded him for a working Onkyo 5000 and a working Sansui G-8000. Did I make out well, Yeah Yeah. I would not spend $70 on them.

I have 2 pair of Optimus T-120 speakers. Not sure the difference between T-120 and T-100.
But the T-120s to my ears are very good. Good highs and Mids...a little too much bass for my tastes but other than that, pretty impressive. And yes, they have a beautiful cabinet and everything seems to be well put together.
I was expecting crappy sound but found anything but that.
Once again, I learned not to be an audio snob....:music:

The better Radio Shack speaker systems are really good sounding. I have four pair here, and have the Nova 8B in a system right now. Great walnut veneered cabinets, & very good drivers. At least in the early 70s RS was the biggest seller of speaker systems.

I'd picked up a pair of T-100's at Goodwill for $20. There's a little chipping of the veneer on the bottom - and the turkey manager had written the price in magic marker on the bottom. I still need to work on that. Otherwise some sun fading workable with a light oil stain wipe for that and some minor scratches.

The "carpet" grilles are dated and about the only non styling thing about these. I presume the veneered backs are to make them look good anywhere in the room.

My foams are in good shape - presumably the no-rot RS foams? They don't look re-foamed.

One point on those in that ad? I'm wondering if the person that *perhaps* replaced a lower woofer - also re-located the terminal block. I ask / state that as mine have the terminal block on the bottom. Odd yes, but I'm guessing it goes along with veneering the back - no "ugly" terminal block to see either.

I haven't checked for crossover - but will. I'd thought mine perhaps lacking a bit in the high end range - and thought of old parts in the crossover - but if there's no crossover then they're as they're supposed to be - or maybe the tweeters need replacing. Comments appreciated on this. I'll post pictures later.

Regarding the ad copy from RS, two possibilities:

1) Just a glitch from the copywriting department. Most RS speakers WERE acoustic suspension, so the writer just kept repeating him/herself, or...

2) The smallish woofer IS in a sealed acoustic suspension cavity. The port is for the mid-range to eliminate resonance.

I know this is an old thread.

Just for future use there is a small cap mounted on the L-pad control for the tweeter, this is the only form of a crossover on the whole thing.

Also, I got my pair for free.
