Realistic QTA-790 and Nova-8

A friend, whose father-in-law passed away, has a Realistic QTA-790 quad receiver and a pair of Nova-8 speakers he wants to sell what would be a fair offer for these items?
The speakers are in mint condition and the receiver powers up and the radio works. The outside of the receiver is dusty but no scratches or dings on the box.

So, I've read a few threads now - some pros and some cons on this equipment. I'm offereing $100. Also comes with a pair of RS MC1000 speakers (whew-who). The friend's wife thought she should be able to get $200. She'd seen similar stuff on E-boy and her father was once a Radio Shack manager (so must be top of the line stuff).

That Radio Shack receiver does sound like a TOTL unit.
The Nova series have a bit of a following.
But other than some specific models of interest to specific RS fans, Realistic doesn't really attract the prices of the more popular brand names like Marantz, Pioneer ...

If you know the approximate year, you could take a look at the Radio Shack catalog archives for specs and msrp.

$100 sounds fair. Maybe a little more but it would depend on the condition.

Update: looks like lower series QTA 75X people are asking $250+ eBay.
Although they may or may not go for those prices.
That's would probably interest me the most anyway.

$100 is a fair price. The Nova 8 are a good speaker, but they are not as good as the Nova 8B in which there is a thread on AK on how to improve on the crossover to make them sound better. You might be better to sell the speakers and the receiver separate. Or why not keep it for your own enjoyment?

It's true, Realistic stuff don't fetch the high prices like Marantz, Pioneer or Sansui pieces because some people think there inferior. But Realistic fans kind of like it that way. :D

I think it can be a little sticky since your friend's wife thinks she can get $200. That is apparently her idea of a fair price for her father's system.

Like I said, see if you can find more information on the 790.

It boils down to what you already have and how much you really want or need a 4 channel receiver plus the speakeres.

And listen to it.

We can give you our opinions of a fair price, but that doesn't always consider the relationships or actual music value you get out of it.

I suppose pluses are the known history and hopefully fully operating condition.

Oh and if you already offered $100, they may just be trying to see if you would be willing meet them halfway.

Thanks for the advice guys. I purchased the items for $100 dollars. Brought them home and they sound great (to me). I checked the radio shack catalogs - the QTA-790 sold for $598 in 1973, the Nova-8 for $125 each in 1974.

Purchase QTA-790 + NOVA Speakers

To anyone out there, I am looking for a Realistic QTA-790 Receiver for sale, I will pay a good price for one where everything works! Would also like some NOVA Speakers. I have the QTA-790 Receiver that I purchased in 1974 that works perfect and still looks new along with the NOVA 8s (2 For Sure) and 2 NOVA 7s I think, the 7s are one size smaller than the 8s but all are the NOVA Series. Beautiful System. I paid almost $1000 back in 1974 for the Receiver, 4 NOVA Speakers and a Garrard Turntable, also had Reel to Reel Tape Recorder/Player, that was serperate. The NOVA Series Speakers have a Lifetime Warranty, I have the receipt. Please, anyone out there that has a QTA-790 Receiver and/or The NOVA Series Speakers 4 Sale, Please Contact Me At My email Address: swyssport@sbcglobal.net or Call or Text Me At: 7759906515. Thanks All. Dave
