Realistic STA-2100

I love my STA-2100 which I picked up for $14. Bit bass heavy but easily tamed by adjusting the bass knob or the eq on the speakers. Also has a lot of hookup options which is great because I can have two tape decks hooked up at the same time.
Beautiful receiver as well.

I had the 2100D for a good while and just loved it. The only reason I sold it was because I was using it for my office system and it was just too big. These RS models are definitely under appreciated by the masses as they are indeed great receivers. When you hold one, you immediately know things are no longer made like this anymore.

The speakers intermittingly (sp?) shut off. From reading past post here the relay needs to be removed and cleaned/replaced. The unit is in perfect condition and being a backyard hacker I don't want to touch it.

Ahh ok. I cleaned mine while it was still on the board (subsequent relays I have removed them as it's easier to get the cover off of them). Once cleaned up, it should last a long time before it goes again! I have had maybe 4 receivers that I have done this to and each has just kept working.

I started out way back in about 1980 or 81 with a Realistic STA-42 (10 wpc) which carried me through HS and University. I still have it, and it still works.

Somebody recently gave me an STA-2080 which imo is one of the coolest looking receivers ever put out with the Realistic name on it (sounds pretty good too).

Enjoy your STA-2100.

Those STA 2100 were beasts. 4 output transistors per channel. Worked on quite a few of them back in the day. Been over 15 years since I worked for Tandy Service. Forgotten a lot more than I remember.

WOW! Is that a Toroidal Transformer I see tucked in there?? Impressive! I've never seen a Realistic Receiver with a toroid before! Great find, congrats! :yikes:

@ Big Tuna yes that is a toroidal. I guess Realistic had the first run of the 2100's made with the toroidal then from what I hear Pioneer filed suit to make them stop because it was too close to their design?

The 2100D have a standard transformer.

I've heard both and I don't hear any difference - do any of you guys know if there is a difference in sound/performance?

Sold my mint 2100 as it was quite nice but not exactly high end. Had some magic in the mids and the over ripe bass. Lot of power and very well built.
May have mated decently with the Mach 1's that I had but the speaks had too many deviations from neutrality.

I do have to say that it was pleasing to look at especially in the dark!!

Here it is....

Just picked this up at local GW for $30. Cleaned it up and it sounds and looks great!! Amazing sound and quality.

Try fingernail, then isopropyl, then acetone. Use sparingly or you might leach out the stain. Looks nice by the way. A steal for $30.
Second the Iso, but nix the fingernail (which typically contains acetone) and will more than likely damage the finish. If Iso doesn't work next bet is 3M adhesive remover (love the stuff) or something like goo gone.

dorsett33, nice steal! I paid $50 for a 2000 this weekend, with speakers and while she's nice I sure would love a 2100.

First, you found a great receiver for an amazing price. Congratulations!

If I recall correctly, the end panels on the 2100 are real wood, as in oiled walnut, not just vinyl laminate over hardboard. If that is the case the paint should not have bonded very well to the wood. I would try a little water to hopefully loosen and soften the paint a bit and then try to scrape it off gently with a fingernail. That is worth a first attempt anyway.

Edit: (Above was written - and paused - while the previous posts were posted. Good advice there.)

Congrats on the 2100.....my GW never has nice gear like that......at least it never makes it to the sales floor.....:scratch2:

Anyone know where to find the green-to-red power switch for STA 2100? Mine is in mint condition but I have to plug and unplug it.

I discovered a Realistic STA-2100 in a local garage a few days ago, along with the Optimus speakers. They were destined for the dumpster, as the guy's wife wanted the garage completely cleaned out yesterday. I have some major-league cleaning ahead of me, but I'm itching to hook it up and see what, if anything, is wrong. Surely it'll need recapped, refoamed or some other predictable repair. If not, I'm way ahead of the game if it works. I scored some other stuff even dirtier, with speaker fabric that a ferret used for a scratching post. No doubt I'll be online for new fabric. A couple of subwoofers, along with bookshelf speakers were just a few extra goodies, along with a Technics steroeo receiver at 290 watts (let's hope, anyway!) I'll share more details down the road, whether good, bad, or ugly.

How did it go? I have one and cannot for the life of me get the tuner knob off
