Realistic STA-65D and general Variable Resistor question

I have inherited a STA-65D that looks/sounds great except for weak radio (AM and FM) reception. Upon closer inspection, I have discovered that someone else has been "in there" and either broke or poorly replaced most (if not all) of the Variable resistors on the IF boards - a combination of 5k, 50k, 20k VRs. I have received Bourns replacements, but am not sure what resistance to set these at since there's no service manual available that might explain where the test points for these are located. I do have a schematic...
I have not replaced any of the VRs yet, thinking that I might set them at some "mid point" on the bench before soldering them in the boards. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
