Realistic STA-95 Problem

Hello:

I have a Realistic STA-95, which I've owned and operated without incident for a few years. Hooked up to Realistic Nova 7B speakers.

The other day while listening to rock music at about 3/4 volume for a few minutes, which I semi-frequently do, the sound suddenly changed. Lost what seems to be midrange. Sounds a little flat, maybe a tiny bit muffled. Seems like the treble and bass work, but something in the middle range sounds lost. Maybe lost a very little bit of volume. Sound changed over both speakers. So, it seems to be a problem with the receiver.

Any ideas what could be wrong?

Thanks.

Check the tweeters on the speakers too, sounds like maybe you've lost one or both (the tweeters in those speakers go bad fairly easily, it may have just been their time). As a test try setting the FM tuner in between stations so it only picks up static and hiss then put your ear next to each of the individual tweeters and listen for the high frequency hissing / static sound. Also turn the balance from left to right to check if both speakers sound the same in the high frequencies (maybe just one speaker has an issue).

Thanks for the input. I'll check these things out. As I mentioned, the sound changed over both speakers. I had switched balance left to right and the sound loss was the same. So, I was thinking it had to be the receiver. I can't imagine both speakers would lose it at the exact same time. Unless, one speaker had failed earlier, and the other was still operational and masking the sound loss. Then if the other speaker went...

I have some spare tweeters specific to these speakers. I can always swap them out and see what happens.

Hey guess what? It was the tweeters. I don't know if they all went at once or one speaker compensated for the sound of the other. Thanks for making me revisit my preconceived notion :)

Well, my extra tweeters were left over from when I replaced them a few years ago. They still worked, but were raspy/buzzy so I had replaced them. So, now I'm on the lookout for four good tweeters for Realistic Nova 7B. If anyone has any they want to sell please let me know.
