Realistic STA2100D replacement transistors

New Member
Hello all, I've been a lurker here for a few weeks and have enjoyed the great info and discussions. I am new to the hobby/addiction of vintage audio. I have begun to put together a system starting with B&W DM110 speakers. I have a working Pioneer sx650 that I picked up cheap and my brother in law is donating a technics sl1300 tt. I have also aquired a Realistic sta2100D which is not working. It is going to need new output transistors on the right channel as well as a few resistors and smaller transistors that are bad. I was wondering if anyone has found suitable replacements for the original Hitachi output transistors. I have not had much luck with google. I also have a Harmon Kardon 800+ with similar issues. Once I have them all working I will audition them all and the winner will stay in my living room. 2nd place will be the heart of the garage system. Thanks in advance for any help.

The most-common (cheap, available, lots of experience with) transistor that meets or exceeds those parameters and is in a compatible package (TO-126 or TO-220) looks like the KSC3503D. It's $0.47 each.

The KSC2690/KSA1220 has a lower current rating than the 2SD669/compliment.

Reviewing the transistors available at Mouser, it looks like the MJE15032/MJE15033 pair would be a better, much-beefier replacement for the 2SD669/2SB649 originals. Just my $0.02

The list I posted is old but its works and I agree the MJE15032/MJE15033 would fit better than the 2SD669/2SB649. The MJE's are quite a bit more transistor, but should give it some reliability. They should fit on the original heatsinks.
May be something like this from Mouser could improve the cooling capability.
I made the correction to the list posted.
The compensation transistor that is mounted to the heatsink should be replaced as a matter of practice. You can still find the 2SD400's at BDent.
The STA 2100 is a wonderful receiver to work on and sounds fantastic when completed.

If you haven't done this before it's best to do one board at a time. Power up on the DBT and recheck the set for operation. Then move to the next board.

Thanks. I have poked under the hood of a few basic units. This one is a little more complex so I will be taking it slow.

This is timely. I'm looking to have mine fully restored in six months or so once my Marantz comes back. Just need to find someone who isn't booked out.

Left amp. board is done. Caps and transistors. Run a few tests on it and then start on the right. The right amp board was working correctly before disassembley. My question is, should I replace the transistors as well as the capacitors? The old add adage .don't fix what's not, broken might apply. Or is it better to replace everything similar to the left amp board.

If the right channel was working, leave it alone. Maybe replace electrolytic caps and bias trimmers.

Thx. All the caps are replaced. Everything else checks out. All new transistors in the left amp only. All the right ones check ok. Might replace the zener diodes in the left as well.

Hi folks. Super glad to find this thread. I'm a big fan of the 78-80s era realistic high end audio gear. I went through and read all 150+ pages of the MachOne thread about the MachOne mods, heavily contributed to by VideoLady201. I did all those mods to my MachOne's and they are awesome. I built myself a matched system around those speakers once they were complete, including the incredible STA-2100D. Lately, the amp has been showing its age. It sputters and the relay clicks on and off when it starts up. One of the phono inputs is only picking up sound on one channel. Sometimes on other inputs the sound will go in and out on the right side and volume will jump sharply. All of this, I'm pretty confident, is a result of the caps drying out. Now, I'm not shy about projects, but if I dug into the 2100, it would be my first major recap project and I am a little cautious about attempting it without having all my plans laid out carefully and parts ordered to be sure I've got everything I need. So, this thread is super helpful. I guess I'm going to have to invest in a Hakko 808 or equivalent with all the desoldering that I'll be doing.
In addition to the caps and the transistor replacement, what other upgrades/mods/replacements should I plan on doing, if I'm going to be thorough, while I'm in there and have things taken apart? I want to do a proper job, as close to a professional job as I can, but not having done it before, I'm not sure what all the steps are that would be needed. I saw on a youtube video about defluxing the boards, and do some people change out the terminal posts? Diode swap? I'm compiling my master list of what I should do and order, so any and all help would be great. I will create/post and share a google doc with this info, similar to what I did with the MachOne project. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1QQhzoCaSh0JKl9XvAZqtelCmoZ525HLjen45JXJCn3o/edit?usp=sharing Thanks to all in advance for your help.

Replaced the drivers: 2SD669/2SB649 with MJE15032/MJE15033

I know it's an old thread, but I don't see this addressed anywhere. As the pinouts are reversed on the MJE15032/MJE15033 from the 2SD669/2SB649, did you just flip the heat sink around and cover the jumper that sits in front of where the original was?

How would I go about finding one of these parts? Specifically this one: C1502 47u 10V EL 647-UPS1A470MDD ?? My resistor started smoking when I tried powering the system on :(

Google "Realistic STA-2100D audiokarma" Lots of stuff.

Replaced the 2SA659/2SC1175 with KSA1013/ KSC2383's
Replaced the 13v zener D509A

The compensating transistor 2SD400 should be replaced found at BDent.
