recap for W70s-- need advice!

Nice score, dude. Those look like W70B's (or at least that's what I'm gonna' call 'em for now... These friggin' W** models, man... They make me so-crazy sometimes). The caps have the pio look, but what some people said about the size makes sense, so they must be VERY-early electrolytics (I'm guessing they started using those when they started using ceramic-magnet woofers, but it could just be a coincidence).

You're gonna' dig those, I'm telling you right now. Nice grab. they must be EARLY W70B's because they have the same-style enclosure as the early ones with that funky crooked opening in front of the mid-woofer (I thought that was a sure-fire way to identify the first-generation W70's, but I guess I was wrong on that).

When hunger calls... (Actually, that's not entirely-true... I got lost over in General Discussion for the better part of the day, and by the time I made it back to Speakers, this thread had drifted over to page 2, so I didn't see it until I went looking for my "W90 Panel" thread).

Hey, I meant to ask what he's using (or planning on using) to power those puppies. Those early ones with the cone-tweets really seem to do very-well with a late '60's / early '70's Sansui solid-state sound, and their tube models should be as good or better, so any amp or receiver with a similar sound should be a good candidate. The *000x series does a great job of opening them up. US-made Sherwood models too. And tube Fishers are supposed to be stellar.

One word about placement. Get those distances right. Break out the tape-measure and really get tight with those tolerances. You'll thank me later. Also, you'll want to get them off the floor just a bit (just enough to get the tweeters at eye-level when you're seated). That's the best way to dial in the magic (Well, that and the right sort of amplification). And if the upper-bass and mids are not EXCEPTIONALLY-coherent (but still ultra-smooth), then it's gotta' be the caps. People say great things about the W70C, and the upper-bass and mids are the best part of my W60's and W90's.

I love 'em though. I can't help it. I just do. I get lost in mine. Did a great job of fleshing out Amy Winehouse's "Back To Black" album, which I am completely-nuts about (That's what's playing right now... The Wharfedales really sort out that midrange and smooth everything out, just like with old Motown).

They'll continue to wake up over the next several weeks/months. All of mine did. Refining placement as well as mid/tweeter-volume settings will help.

I keep the tweeters on my W60's turned up full, but I generally keep the mid and tweeter volumes on my W90's set to around 2:45 to 3:00. Don't know what the best settings are for the W70's, but I always keep the mid-woofer-volumes set identical to the tweeter settings. Gives me the best balance.

Hooked my W90's back up tonight... Was missing them just a wee bit.
