Recap of amp

kc6wfs

Saugus, Ca
I am going to (re) recap my Sherwood S5500 IV 80w amp tomorrow.

Question,

I ordered plain orange caps for most of the non electrolytic caps.

But I forgot I have a ton of WIMA MKP and MKS caps.

Are the Wima's better than plain wrap caps?
Would my amp see or me hear any difference in the 2 types of caps?

Thanks,

Dave

I believe Sherwoods tend to be on the cramped side, be sure the wima's will fit ok. Good luck!

5500's aren't too bad for space. They're not nearly as cramped as the receivers.

I'd put a 5500-IV on the same par as recapping a Fisher, in terms of available space-per-component.

Regards,
Gordon.

For what its worth, the originals may be OK. If its those brown mylar caps like many Sherwoods had, they last almost forever. My S-7000 sports it's originals and they test perfectly.

If they are the same as in their S-3000 tuners ... that would be El Menco brand.

Yep, those "brown dip" caps very rarely fail. The epoxy coating pretty much hermetically seals them, so they don't typically die from environmental contamination like the wax-sealed caps tend to do.
