Recapped both pairs of Heresy's today (w/pics)

Not that it's anything you all haven't seen before but I thought for poops and grins I'd post a few pictures of the recap. The first pair I did was the 1975 Heresy's which had some caps I'd not seen in any pair of Klipsch speakers I've had before...but this is the oldest pair I've had thus far. Also, these have the K-22-E woofer in them, too, where the 1976 models I recapped have the K-22-EF woofers. Interesting. Are those alnico magnets on the K-22-E woofer? The '75 models have the older PWK emblems on them and the '76 have the more "usual" Klipsch emblems at the top. The '75 pair had its factory risers which were not angled...but are the same height all the way around. The '76 pair had the holes in the bottoms where they once had risers, but they weren't on them when I got them. So, I'll make a set for those with some Oak and then stain to match.

Easy recap job as always and the differences are noticeable and I used my always faithful Solen caps as I have for 25+ years. On the '75 pair, I reused the original brackets that held down the caps and on the '76, I used screw down style zip ties back into the original holes. Both pairs use the Type E crossover networks, too.

Simplest thing in the world to do to the Heresy's is recap them and, as we all know, there are tons of choices for caps. The Solen's run about $2.35 each at Madisound so you're under $9 for caps per speaker plus S/H (which is by far cheaper at Madisound than Parts Express).

To me, they sound good as they are right now. I just turn the bass up a little on the preamp and they are good to go. I'm listing to some Melody Gardot right now and these work really well with that style of music as they did the Norah Jones I was listening to earlier. I know there are "upgrades" but I rather enjoy them like they are.

The only thing I'm deliberating on now is if I want to change out the factory screw down terminals for some basic banana style connections like on the Heresy 2's. I hate those screw down things because I have to remove the banana plugs from the wires before I can listen to them. Plus, those wires being so close together kind of scare me and the fact that some of the plastic is broken on those strips so there isn't as much of a barrier between the + and -. Hmmm....

Thanks for taking the time to take pictures and post this...I've been considering doing a recap on mine and this makes me feel much more confident in doing so.

What are the values of the caps? Thanks, Preston

Nice job, looks like a nice basic recap. I got the Bob Crites crossovers with new cedar boards and all. I will hold on to the originals and possibly do the caps for another set if one comes along.

DITTO. nice job on the recap:thmbsp:. I purchased new Bob Crites cross overs for Pop's old Cornwalls and I have the orginal boards in the closet. One of these days soon I will recap my HII but they still sound like new.:music:

I wonder if you'd be kind enough to tell me which part number you use for Solen capacitors? I have a very similar pair of Heresy's and I'd like to try this, using this post as my guide.

I terminate my wires with spades when I have screw terminals on older gear. I don't trust the close proximity either.

I use these on the back of my 1979 Cornwalls with those two screws in that plastic block. These fit right in and you can use banana plugs horizontal or vertical with them. http://www.ebay.com/itm/8-Adapter-F...=US_Audio_Cables_Adapters&hash=item2a17a0a092

Wow. Great idea. Thank you for posting. I just hit the purchase button.

They use to sell them in packs of 8 for a better deal. I also tried their Nakamichi banana plugs for my HD AVR :thmbsp: As I have some Sewell (a little more more expensive) that as good as these from this seller. No affiliation with the shop....... just passing along so info . These are hard to beat as I have them in my bedroom system (Heresy II/sub) http://sewelldirect.com/Sewell-Silverback-Banana-Plugs-Dual-Screw-Lock-2-pair.asp

I'm in the process of recapping my Heresys. I used the Solen caps from Parts Express:

Solen 2.0uF 400v polypropylene cap. $2.95
two per speaker.

They beat me to it. Lol. I don't have either pair of the Heresy's anymore. I miss the 2's once in awhile though. But now I have some of the bigger ones...KLF-30's and CF-3's. Eventually these will get recapped too. I'm glad my thread helped someone out.

Try a C7 with those KLF30's :thmbsp: I love those KLF30 3 ways as they have 2 Heresy 12" woofers and they are ported. There is a internal port mod you can do on the KLF30 that lets them dig a bit deeper. :music:

It's ironic that I spent 25+ years in the home A/V industry (9 years being a manufacturers rep) and got out of it July 2009 and haven't owned a surround setup since. Honestly, I don't miss it. On the occasion I, or the family, watch movies, it's just good ol' 2-channel and it sounds great. But I do know that C7 is a beast of a center channel.

I completely agree. I still am a factory rep, but couldn't get a multi-channel receiver out of my house fast enough. I am so happy with a basic NAD C316, two channel integrated amp and a good pair of speakers.

I have two separate systems in my small den so I can enjoy analog stereo thru my Klipsch Cornwalls and 5.2 HT(they are fronts) for Blurays :D and when my Grand Kids come over playing video games thru a PS3 is awesome when the rear speakers and bouncing the sound all around the room :D I am retired and I watch a lot of TV and HD 5.2 audio can be engaging. To each his own :thmbsp:
