Recapping mc240

Helll everyone,

I'm in the process of recapping an mc240, and I'm curious if anyone can confirm whether the voltage doubler caps and the 30 uf capacitor appear to be original. It seems the 50 uf cap might not be original, and overall, the values doesn’t appear to be accurate. Appreciate any insights.

I cannot tell you if they are original but if you are recapping you should change them all. Try https://hayseedhamfest.com/ if you can't find replacements. You can also email McIntosh Laboratories with your model and serial number and they will send you the correct schematic.

I can't seem to find this disc cap on the schematic. Does any know whats the function is and where to find it on the schematic?

Sorry if this is a non-sequitur, but why worry? It is almost certainly good-as-new. I would say it is certainly not to be replaced unless there is some evidence that it has failed.

But in the spirit of noble curiousity: For sure it its function is bandwidth limiting. Could be to suppress RF parasitic (oscillation, I infer) as ramjet suggested, or just to keep overall frequency response to a reasonable limit. My main curiousity would be: why only in one channel? I bet there is a story there.
 
I agree , why replace it when it’s working. I was just confused by why it’s just only one of those on one channel but considering it’s such a low value it will only suppress high frequencies to ground. So my guess is that it’s suppressing 125 v power supply high freq/noise, so only one of these is needed. Actually it will suppress noise from all the high voltage supplies.
 
If I may, I would offer two points:

1. It is always helpful to specify the origin of the schematic being referenced. In this case, the cap in question is in fact C9 -- if you're looking at the Sams schematic, but it's C28 on an actual Mac schematic for the MC240. For continuity of discussion, my references here continue on with the Sams component designations.

2. As for the purpose and why there is only one -- that's because there are in fact two -- one for each channel -- but one is hidden. In the right channel, that cap takes the form of the shielded cable used to connect the output from the section of V1 supplying the right channel signal (pin 6) to V7, which is physically located some distance from V1. For the left channel, the output of V1 (pin 1) goes directly next door to V2, so no shielded cable is required for such a short connection. The cap is therefore not so much a necessary ingredient for any specific suppression or filtering function, as it is an effort to make the circuit conditions identical between the two channels, in spite of differing physical layout/lead dress conditions between them. If you look closely at the schematic then, the "other" cap is shown as the shielded cable running from pin 6 of V1 to V7 for the right channel, where the physical cap C9 is used to replicate the capacitance of that cable in the left channel.

Gotta love Mac's attention to detail!

Based on your pics the voltage doubler caps appear to be original. When you replace them, would suggest doing them all with fresh caps. Also be really careful with the mounting of the voltage doubler cap on the insulating wafer. It is very easy to crack that wafer. Take your time and go slow. Use very gentle force nothing too harsh.
Even if the caps still test good, they are near the end of their life so would replace all.
