Recapping, Rebuilding, Restoring, Rest-o-modding... a Pioneer SX-450 receiver

I have a question about the BOM you included in post #30. In post #32 you give a list of all the transistors you replaced. But in the BOM you only mention 2 x 4 transistors. Should I also replace the others you mentioned in #32?

That's a good catch.

The BOM really just covers what you really, really should replace. My longer list of transistors in post #32 covers all those that *I* replaced. I'm more of a replace-with-modern-devices-if-possible kinda person.

As I have leave next week, I had already ordered the BOM from post # 30 and added the transistors from post # 32. In terms of cost, that didn't make a very big difference.

I had started looking for the parts at companies in Europe but because Mouser is regularly mentioned here on the forum, I thought to give it a try. What turns out now? Ordered on Wednesday and delivered on Friday at noon. From Texas US to a farmer's village in Belgium. And without extra transport costs (from € 50). I find this extraordinary...

Still a question. For R203/R204 on the AWE-074 board you have listed 560 Ohm resistors. According to the technical manual and the revised technical schematic, this should be 2.2k Ohms. Is this a typo on your part? Or can you remember why you used 560 Ohm?
And just because I'm curious: what could be the effect of this?

Hi Tittah
I am from Switzerland and want to rebuild my SX-450 as well :). Do you per any chance have a order-ready BOM for Mouser? Did you also do the trim pot mod?
Thanks!
Noël

I'm not sure this BOM is 100% complete (I don't remember). And yes, I did the trim pot mod.

It was the first amplifier I recapped. Maybe more to practice soldering and identifying components, as the amp had no problem. I would not do this again now. Recapping an amp that is working fine, is just a waste of time and money. And to be honest, I have never ever heard any difference after a recap. But that might just be my ears...

Thanks a lot for the BOM! Great
Yes, for me too this is more a playing ground for getting more experience in soldering and recapping. I bought the Pioneer as his first music system but first it's gonna be a fun project for me . Let's see if I hear a difference after the mod, but this depends from the rest of the system of course (speakers, sources, cables, etc...)
What other projects did you do?

I have exclusively focused on old Philips equipment. These are beautiful, usually undervalued devices that are still quite easy to come by in my region. I'm also active (meaning, I usually only ask questions as I'm not great at reading schematics :)) on a Dutch-speaking forum where mainly Philips equipment is discussed. The mantra there is that, with perhaps an exception for the parts that are really known to fail after so many years, you don't replace anything if it's not broken.
For now, I'm still blown away by the sound of the old Philips 'fish eye' amplifiers. And since not so long ago, also by the MFB speakers that they made in the 1970s.

I have a Marantz CD65 MKII which I want to recap etc., basically a Philipps too ;). I didn't know the "fish eyes", looks interesting !

  • Bend the legs of the trimpot as I did before (middle wiper leg to one of the two sides)
Attach the high side leg to the center wiper leg. The high is the CW side which would be the right leg.
