Reccomendations for a Tech to Repair/Refurbish Technics RS-1700

Hello,

I recently acquired a Technics RS-1700 Reel to Reel. It has some problems, but they all seem to be the commons issues one expects with this deck. Speed is off unless the manual pitch is on, large db drop in record mode and extra low on the right channel, slack in the tape on stops. Also, the auto stop/reverse has not worked, but I may not have the correct leader. A prior owner has the tape guides out of adjustment and someone has had the capstan motor out, but there does not appear to be any other attempts at recap etc. on the inside.

I'm in St. Louis, MO and I'm interested in finding a reputable Technician who is well versed in this machine for repairs and the recap that I understand is a must for this model. I would like someone who can quote me at least an average cost for a job like this and someone close to the midwest would be ideal. Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

I've managed to talk to a couple of audio technicians and they both advise me to return the deck to the seller. That seems like the best course of action right now.

I see? And resell? How about the optical condition of the device?
And would the price be attractive in this condition? 220V AC?

I can’t really help you with repair advice ( my exis mainly wirh A series TEACs) but Technics RS1700 is a very desirable R2R and highly sought. You can check complete auctions on EBay if you haven’t already to see yourself.
It all depends of the purchase price and you willing to put some effort and cost for repairs.
As you probably know, Dollars and sense is appropriate forum to discuss specific prices so you could ask some questions there.
I am also sure a number of members here would be very interested in this machine...
Maybe going to Tapeheads forum would get more answers and recommendations for tech. One should be in Chicago area (name escapes me) which is not that far from you.
