Receiver advice, Pioneer SX-535 or Sony STR-5800

That's correct, the bulbs are 'white'. However, incandescent 'white' is different from LED 'warm white' and LED 'cool white'. All will have a slightly different appearance. The only real way to see the difference is to try the different bulbs in your particular unit. You can see some examples on DGWojo's website. Scroll down for examples and descriptions. @dgwojo is an AK member and the go-to source for bulbs.

Thanks,

Yeah, I usually go with warm white for the more standard incandescent look around the house. That's probably what I'll do for this receiver to keep that OEM look. I appreciate your comments. It's nice to have an active platform. Bookmarked the website!

As you may know, the edge of the dial glass on the X800 series is painted green to achieve the green tint. The green paint often gets bleached out over time. Although green lamps (incandescent or LED) can be used, I personally haven't been satisfied with the results. An alternative is to refresh the green tinting with craft paint as shown on this thread:

Only have the 7800 now although my son has the 5800. I wish I still had the 6800!

Ah, did you go with just white LEDs to keep the OEM look? I'm guessing the incandescent bulbs aren't actually green lights.

I used Green LEDs. The new lamps were a little shorter than the OEMs so I had to pinch the lamp holders a bit to mount them tightly.

Oh that's nice. Have you had any issue with the push buttons not engaging? when I push some of them, they don't click and stay depressed. I haven't opened it up yet either, still working on getting my workspace setup. The only other issue that I can tell is that I don't get any sound when the dial is on the lower end of the stations. There's a classical station that is pretty powerful at 90.9, but when I go there, no sound. The indicator does change to show it is in stereo, but no sound. Right side seems good. Is there another thread I should be asking that? :)

The only button that should not stay in when depressed is the "Multipath" button and that is by design. If others don't stay in, they may need cleaning or are defective.

The lack of sound at one end of the dial is beyond my skill set! Perhaps the variable capacitor needs cleaning but be careful! Follow these instructions: https://audiokarma.org/forums/index.php?threads/how-to-clean-a-tuner-analog.144163/

Ah! that's good info to know. Thanks.

I'll read up on anything I attempt to clean or repair, but thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

It's been a while, but was hoping you could give me a link for the green LEDs you used. I'm looking on ebay and there's not many options.

Hi. I will have to look in my files for the vendor's name and link. Hope I can find it ;) It may take me a couple of days so please stay tuned. Thanks.

Greg

Contact @dgwojo. Click the link to the left for a profile pop-up. His email address will show in the pop-up window. Send him an email, tell him the make and model of your unit and what bulbs you're looking for. He will reply with available options. He's the best.

Thanks,
Joe

Interesting. When I redid my 7800 I didn't change the bulbs since all lights were working. I'll keep this in mind for when I need to replace a bulb.

Here's a pic from right after replacing the lights. I went with some green leds that I found on amazon. They were a little big and the left side took some adjusting, but I think it turned out well. I'm about done with it and will take another when it's fully back together.
