Receiver / Amplifier Volume Issue

I’m not completely new to building my vintage stereo, but have an issue I’ve had trouble solving. I have a Sherwood 7100a receiver, connected to a Crown DC300a power amplifier running a set of Bose 901 Series VI speakers. Everything works well, but I’m unable to control any volume on the receiver, and can only adjust by the gains on the amp. I have the receiver running to the amplifier connection on the Bose EQ, then to the amp. I’m sure it’s a simple thing I’m overlooking, or just something I don’t understand. Any help would be wonderful.

Are you using Tape out of the Sherwood to the EQ?

The problem is the Sherwood does not have any variable line level outputs, AKA no pre-outs.

If you don't want to get a different receiver or preamp that has variable line level/pre outs then you can keep doing what you're doing, or get a speaker to line level converter box.

The sherwood doesn't have a preamp out. If you're using the tape outs, which I think you are, you can't use any functions available on the sherwood except the tuner, phono preamp, and source selection. Everything else is useless.

I've never used it, but this one is well reviewed and inexpensive. It's designed for car audio, but most of them are, and it will work fine in the home.

Thanks again. After looking at all of this, I think I'll eventually change receivers. In the meantime, I'll keep doing what I'm doing.

You can actually get by with just a preamp. You can use your receiver as a tuner if you want one, and you already have a power amp.

That means the Sherwood is only acting as a function switch. It provides the tuner but if you don’t use that, then the Sherwood isn’t doing much for you at all.

Simple answer, you have it connected wrong.

Page 7 of the Bose manual says to use the tape monitor circuit to connect the 901 Active Equalizer (both the input and output). You would then use the Sherwood's Tape Monitor switch to use the Bose EQ. You can then use all the features of the Sherwood.

As for hooking up an external amp to the Sherwood, you need to use a speaker output to line input converter because the Sherwood does not have a preamp out connection. I built one for my network enabled receiver connected to a good amp. No audible degradation of sound.

I cut off one end of an interconnect cable, soldered resistors and pigtails, and then connect the pigtails to the speaker outs.

Yes, that is output to tape. It’s labeled differently on different units.
