Receiver dead from SITTING??????

Hi all-

College student here. I was abruptly whisked away from my dorm room (and all belongings inside) thanks to Corona. As a result, my TEAC receiver has been sitting unused for several months. I recently collected my belongings...went into my dorm room and the first thing I did was put on some tunes to assist with the packing.

Fired up my receiver only to find that the self-protection circuitry kicks in after a few seconds of operation. Protect mode could be a result of anything from fried output transistor to shorted outputs to a bad thermistor (thermal protect). Mind you, this is a 20+ year old unit (yes, older than me), but it has never given me a peep of trouble.

My initial thought was that there was a power surge, but all connected devices were plugged into a surge protector so that is not the case.

I'm simply curious if anyone else has experienced a similar situation of their equipment dying from sitting in storage. Seems very strange that this unit would go from perfectly working to no good from NOT being used.

Thoughts??

I don’t have any suggestions as to how, but depending on the type of surge protector, it could be not much more effective than a strip of outlets. The surge protectors within most surge protection power strips is pathetically inadequate. Most consist of just one or two MOV’s across the power terminals. So, my suggestion is don’t rule out power surge if you use one of those surge strips.
 
Assuming nothing effected the speakers, speaker connections, or speaker wires and you didn't play at 11 frequently, I'm thinking just a freaky coincidence.
Guessing its a relatively new unit, any chance its still under warranty?

If it had sat dormant for years, this would not come as a great shock. But this was -- what -- several weeks, a couple of months? Seems like something (bad) must have happened to the unit during the move from then back to your school digs. Good luck w/ your diagnoses of the cause and hope y'all find a solution.

I bought a Sansui integrated from another AKer once, and when it arrived it did not come out of protection. Turned out he had it sitting in a closet for some time and had not tested it because it worked when he stored it. It was a 25 cent capacitor in the protection circuit. Stuff like that can happen. :dunno:
 
Doodoo occurs. I bought a Kenwood from a local here and it sounded great at the demo, great for the next week, and lousy and distorted from then on.
 
Unused for a couple months and no problems beforehand....

Protection circuit kicks in after it’s been playing for a while....because it’s getting hot due to a large power drain.

I’d get a spray can of Deoxit and spray the insides down....with the exception of the rotating tuner mechanism. Use Q-tips to remove dirt and dust and look for corrosion and goo seeping out of round capacitors. If everything looks good, try and see if it works correctly.

Duh, eh?

power on is a surge event and when perhaps the most stress occurs.

many folks report the same occurance.
Turned it on and poof.
