Receiver Decisions

Most of my knowledge for stereos is all car audio.. SPL geared specifically.. but i am trying to build a nice stereo for my house now that is loud and still sounds decent.. What should i be looking for a stereo? i love listening to a house stereo with big mids so i was thinking about getting some tower speakers with dual 10's, 12's, or 15's.. so i found a couple online:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7124685&type=product&id=1109937802226

what do you guys think of these? and what would i be looking at for powering them? i know the MTX are 4ohm woofers so i would need a receiver that is 4ohm stable.. should i get a receiver that is 4ohm stable or should i look for mids that are only 8ohm woofers?

also would i be hooking up the 10-15" woofers to the sub output on the receiver and the small mid and tweeter to the front channel or how would i hook that up?

Thanks for the help guys

If I was chossing between the vegas and the Mtx's ... I'd get the vegas, but probably with 10" drivers for a tighter mid and also run a 15" to 18" powered sub. If distorsion is not a value you care about, any of the subs will work, if you prefer a better sounding sub , go with perhaps a Velodyne ULD 18, they have an accelerometer circuit that samples the signal and won't allow the sub to play a distorted tone, or believe it or not get a sunfire 10 , the one with the 3800 watt amp, and will "Boom" your neighbors house and jar your bones.

as far as hookup, hook the speakers to the speaker jacks on your reciever, etc. and the sub to the sub output of the reciever, if it doesn't have a sub out, then you'll be hooking the sub speaker level, which works , but not as well as line level.

as far as components, the sky's the limit are you buying a reciever or doing separates ? whats your budget ? is this only for music or are you building a theater ? How big is your room ?, etc...

yes i am looking at buying a receiver.. and budget is like 1000-1500 for everything.. the room is big.. like 500sq feet big

Before you buy a reciever, read this link . That being said you should spend the most you can afford on the reciever, next speakers and then wire.

http://hometheater.about.com/od/audiocomponents/bb/bybaavreceiver.htm

based on your budget, you may be somewhat limited. but If I were you I'd Get a Denon or Onkyo or a Pioneer , try for a 7.1 reciever , you can find these in the $400 - $1000 range for their middle of the line , lineups.

Get those Cerwin Vegas, but also see if you can find a Home theater package deal of vegas, so all of your speakers are timbre matched , bacause they'll compliment each other better , so a deal that has 2 fronts, a center, 2 sides 2 rears and a sub. (Powered subs are better ).

Wire: you being a car audio guy, know that the bigger the wire the better the sound. make sure you run at least 12 guage wire and it could be stuff you've used in the car stereo stuff, ( I've found wire for cars alot cheaper than, buying Monster ) also make sure you run the same amout of wire for each respective speaker , so balance is maintained. Also get some reasonably priced interconnects , like vanco, etc.

You'll be hard pressed to achieve the sound you desire for less than $2,000 +, but if you shop around , you may do well !

Good Luck and let us know what you ended up with !

Your room is ALOT bigger than a car and it's not just square feet but cubic feet you are trying to fill up. My suggestion would be to find a speaker that is at least 90db efficient or more. You will get more "boom for your buck".

The cerwin vega CLS 215's are awesome! I think it was sound and vision who said they are awesome and great sounding! Even the CLS-15s and a 12" or 15" sub would kick some ass!
