Receiver for Cerwin Vega E-315 and Optinus Pro X77s

So in my search of a starting receiver I found a Home Theater Receiver that looks promising but too promising... It's the Yamaha RX-V550, it looks and sounds like an awesome deal for $70 but I'm not too sure on Yamaha never used their products. So does anyone have some input of this particular one? Can't seem to find much expect an old CNET post and I don't trust CNET at all.

Welcome to AK.

You are going to get a lot of different info when asking for a particular receiver on AK. What I can say is Yamaha builds great quality receivers. I currently have a RX-V671 (7.1) posted to CL.

Your speakers are the CV E-315's and the X77's you will need a good amount of power in order to get the most sound out of them. I'd suggest 90WPC or more.

If this set up is for music only, I'd start looking into some of the Yamaha Natural sound receivers. Craigslist is your best friend for audio... and your in CA, you will be just fine!

Depending on your budget, and what you are actually trying to do a good used receiver can be had fro under $100.00 bucks.

Id say start looking on CL for stereos/receivers or even a nice integrated amp.

Yeah for sure those CV E-315 are gonna need ample wpc to sound their best,IMO even 100 wpc (+/-) reciever is'nt really gonna do the trick.
Me,I'd start looking at 200+ wpc (high current) power amps to drive those.

So if a reciever is mandatory I'd recommend going with one that has the pre-out/main-in set-up so you can drive those CV's w/a big brute of a power amp.
Then it does'nt really matter how much wpc the reciever is putting out as it'll only be functioning as a preamp & tuner.

Heck I got a honest 200 wpc amp (Adcom GFA-555 MkI) pushing my E-712's (w/12" woofers vs. the E-315's 15" woofers) and they could easily handle more power.

I know guys w CV's like this that are using some seriously stout 500 wpc mono-blocks and they sound ohhhhh sooooo suuuhhhwwweeeeetttt.

Dont let the CV's high sensitivity specs fool you,those things just love big amps driving them,so ask me the more wpc the better.

Yeah... That's the Problem I won't have a job until late July early August so that's why I'm trying to start off small so I figured a basic Receiver, plus the Vegas are going to be in my small room.

That Yamaha is a decent receiver, but you can find something better for around $70. Not really a "deal" IMO. I love Yamaha HT receivers. They seem to have lower failure rates than other brands and I really like their feature sets. I have 2 in service currently; I actually have a RX-V671 like joebrewer in the HT setup. However, that one is a very aged model and there's nothing special about it.

I recommend a Yamaha RX-V663. The prices on those tend to stay around $100 or below. Those have pre-outs so you can easily add a power amp later. Additionally, they have HDMI and support DTS HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD (AKA the standard Blu-Ray audio codecs before X/Atmos) if you want to use it for HT. I used one of these in college for a couple years and it was great. My dad has one too (he has 4 Yamaha HT receivers in service).

Hi Fraijoni,

Save your money, this hobby only gets more expensive.

So for a budget receiver, look into used Onkyo gear. They are all over CL, and if you are planning on upgrading in the near future, dont spend a lot on initial set up.

Also, one thing you can try is to look up E-Waste centers in your area, some times thy sell stereo gear... you would be surprised.. I picked up a Pioneer SX -1250 in fantastic cond for $40.00 bucks, there is a thread on the site somewhere where i fully rebuilt and documented the amp. There are great deals out there, they key is to search and be patient. This is not going to happen in a few days of looking, timing is everything.
