Receiver options. Any worth the price?

Craigslist vintage receiver pickings are pretty slim near me. I've been watching closely, but no great deals have popped up. I also have access to a vintage audio shop that sells things on consignment, but their prices are inflated.

Wondering if any of these are worth purchasing as my first receiver.

Onkyo TX-4500 MKII - $175
Marantz 2240B - $240
Technics SA-6000x - $160
Sanyo JCX-2900k - $300
Yamaha R-700 - $100

All have been serviced/cleaned, but I'm not sure any are even close to worth the cost. The Sanyo is by far the most interesting of the bunch (to me), but that doesn't strike me as a good price.

I always think if buying something to use and not to resell, that spending a few extra bucks to buy something I like, I want and is in good working and cosmetic condition is worth the extra $25 or so. That said the Marantz doesn't seem grossly over priced and the Onkyo is one of my favorite receivers. If they are actually serviced that alone is worth time and money. Grab one and start enjoying.

Thanks! Wasn't sure what to think of either the Onkyo (which I know very little about) or the Marantz (which doesn't seem to be all that highly regarded compared to other Marantz receivers, and I assumed was a bit inflated due to the name).

Any thoughts about a Sansui 7070 compared to either of those two receivers?

Even though it is the most expensive, by far the one to get here is the Sanyo if you have the extra $. If it is in good shape and you can get it for $250 to $300, you will have one heck of a receiver. I have a slew of the Sanyo Plus equipment and can vouch for its never tiring presentation. It is not part of my everyday system, but when I go back to it, I always end up with a smile on my face. I do not believe you will be disappointed.

300 dollars could buy a pretty nice new receiver with some savvy shopping as opposed to mid or entry level old gear. Each their own.

The 7070 is IMO another very nice receiver. Myself, I would choose the Onkyo or Sansui over the Marantz. I have owned a 7070(sold it on BT due to overload of receivers) and still use my 4500 MK II daily. I have no experience with the Sanyo but I would believe those here that have owned them.

Thanks for all the feedback. Can't say there's a wealth of more recent used receivers available either. The best is probably an 80 wpc Harman Kardon 3390 for $100. Any reason to consider that over the best of the vintage options?

a marantz 2240b is worth 240. even without a wood box.

i paid 225 for my 2250b, I bought it from a friend several years ago who gave me a deal on it.

if you're waiting for a score price, you'd have far better luck camping out a goodwill than you will camping craigslist, if you're looking for a reasonable price on a nice stereo, get that marantz.

Thanks. You're actually in a unique position to be helpful here... I'm also looking at a Sansui 7070 (I see you have the 9090), and my speakers are also DCMs (TF-600).

Any opinion between those two receivers based on your experiences with similar equipment?

Ah yes, I suppose that could be helpful info. I'm in Grand Rapids, MI (added that to my profile now). Not sure how many local AK members there are.

Don't know about Michigan AKers, but IMHO it would be the best investment to join AK Barter Town ($25 for a year) - tons of great gear there...
And if you don't mind shipping......

those sansuis are very nice receivers as well, and the 7070 is rated 60wpc or so, so you would have more options with speakers having 20 extra watts, both are stable at 4ohms as well, opening up more options. (i assume the 7070 is stable at 4, the 9090 is)

I like that era of dcm speakers, and used to have time windows as well, wish I still did..i miss those, they dont match up well with my ads l400's though which is why they're on a separate system, I prefer ads over dcm, and I prefer the marantz over the sansui, but these are just personal tastes and yours may be different.

it was a tough decision for me, which one sounds better.. its really hard to decide and if you had the option i'd say get both, and keep both, because from time to time you might wanna switch them out and enjoy something different for a while, that being said though, ive still got the marantz, I traded that 9090db for other audio products. it had nothing to do with disliking the receiver tho, if i get another opportunity to own one for a good price, i'd jump on it. some opportunities are too good pass on though, I was offered infinity kappa 6, a paradigm dsp-3100, and 200 bucks in trade for the 9090. couldnt pass on that. :)
