Receiver or Separates?

It so happens that through local resources and eBay, I have a number of Sansui options available to me. My question is Receiver or Separates. Here's what I could go after.

The specs on the separates seem to be much better in the THD department on the separates. Question: would I notice at normal listening volumes - I listen mostly to orchestral, chamber, acoustic jazz at modest volumes.

Frankly, if you got the G-9000 and it was in proper working condition, I can't imagine that you'd be disappointed in any way. It was an "all out effort" by Sansui, and more advanced that the preceding 9090DB and better built than the subsequent G-9700. It was the "high water mark" for Sansui in Receivers. The G-22000 and G-33000 are even bigger and more powerful, but their sound quality, according to others here who have actually had them, can be disappointing. So, the G-9000 is unquestionably the best Sanui Receiver.

Of the Integrated Amps, clearly the AU-9900A is the way to go. Built like a tank. Another "all out effort" by Sansui. No question about that. If you don't listen to FM Radio, and the AU-9900A is much less than the G-9000, that's the way to go.

However, if the G-9000 and the AU-9900A are going for about the same amount, I'd get the G-9000 in a heartbeat. Appearance-wise, it has much more "presence" than the big, black box and, sound-wise, I just can't imagine that you'd hear any sigificant difference in the sound quality at normal listening levels (i.e. 0.5-10 watts). Are there differences? OF COURSE. Are they worth paying for? Not in my book. G-9000: it's a winner.

Peter, I have to agree with VS on this one.
Even if I really had a serious liking for seperates, the G 9000 has a presence all its own.
I am not up to speed on the others mentioned but I now own 2- G 9000s, a G 9000DB and a G 8000. All are awesome looking units and all have very nice sound and more then enough power to rock anyones world.
I would not turn my back on a nice G 8000 unit either because I can't find a thing to complain about with this fine receiver.

I was fortunate to have EW work over one of my 9000s and the 9000DB and I don't have to expound on his fine tunning in this forum. With a few of his upgrades and a good cleaning he has them singing loud and clear and he has me searching for the sticker because I know he dropped a "HEMI" in there. LOL

You will not go wrong with G 8000 or G 9000 units or the UK models G 801 or G 901. I think the DB models are just as nice but the DB function is a bit of a Moot issue to most.

Build quality is something I know little of but I do know as long as all the parts are there when you get one, it should be highly repairable for a long time to come.

Very interesting. What do you think of the 9090DB? There are actually two available fairly local to me, one in a private sale and another on an eBay auction.

Strictly from what I have read here, the 9090DB is a very nice unit indeed.
From what is written, it is not the equivelant of a G 9000 by any stretch but no slouch either. I do like the looks of them and I would deffinately buy the local one over the ebay unless I was absolutely certain the seller was genuine and honest and would pack it very well. We have all had our bad experiences with shipping problems and Ebay liars. If the local one is a nice unit I would pay a bit extra and avoid the possible hassels.

The G units and particularly the G 8000 and 9000s are the ones from the golden age of stereo and supposed to be the very best of all the line. You would have to talk to the techs about differences but I am very impressed with all of my units. Being at the very least 27 years old and still kicking out great tunes is astonishing in and of itself.
