Receiver pops, flickers when turned on

Hello, I'm seeking some help on a problem I'm having with a receiver. It's a Realistic STA-85 and when I turn it on, the lights flicker and there is a hum and pops in the speakers. It only happens for a short time (10-30 secs) but the pops are so bad they blew out some of my woofers! RIP

I have the unit open now and vacuumed some of the dust. I'm not sure how to approach this issue since there are no obvious faults in the parts.

Sounds like an arcing power switch, the switch will need replacement.

You may still have to take your switch apart and sand/polish the contacts.

Thanks for the link, that job looks a bit overwhelming but I'll keep it in mind in the future. I ended up cleaning the contacts and now it works fine.

I have a Sansui 551 that did that. With the power turned off I used some contact cleaner and sprayed the contacts around the transformer and the power switch and scrubbed them with an old toothbrush where possible. It has not arced since (2 years now).
