Receiver suggestion for Boston Acoustics HD9

Hey everyone! Im new to the forums and just recently posted in the Introductions section. After reading the thread Where To Post, it was reaffirmed for me that I should post my question apart from my Introduction post.

So here is the copy/paste from my post:


My setup currently consists of a Technics SL-1200 M3D mounted with an Ortofon Red cartridge, a pair of Boston Acoustics HD9 speakers, and a Kenwood KA-51 receiver. I am pretty happy with everything thus far, it all sounds pretty darn good. But buying the Kenwood KA-51 receiver was just a quick buy from a local audio store to get the setup running. It is in mint condition and serviced to a tee, but I am aware it is not of the best receivers out there even in the slightest. I am currently obsessing over looking for a nice Marantz, although I am open to Sansui and Pioneer as well. Looking to spend 200 or less; also attempting to sell my Kenwood to provide some funds towards the upgrade so that would give me a little leeway.

I was not sure whether to post in Solid State or Tube, so here I am in General Audio. I can move this over if someone can point me in the right direction!

I am currently in talks with someone selling a Marantz 1060. It is listed for 200, but thinking about offering a little lower. Would that be a good fit for my setup?

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I would say maybe look for something with a little more power. For around $200 you could find a Sansui AU 517 or Sansui 7070. Or a Pioneer SX 950 or 9500. Also I love my Yamaha CR 1020! If you can find one for $200 snag it or even the model under it the CR 820. Good luck!
 
What would be the ideal power output I would be looking for? I have been browsing for all of the mentioned receivers on Ebay and Craigslist but cannot seem to find any good looking, functional receivers in my price range. It's looking like all of the receivers in that power range generally are priced significantly more than 200 on Ebay. Am I looking in the wrong places, or maybe just waiting and watching is the game to play?
 
Yeah, the watching and waiting game is the way to go. If you are in a major city or even small city craigslist is probably your best bet. I looked up the specs for the speakers and without getting technical they should be fine powered by even 50W but having a little more power is not a bad thing. I mentioned some of the receivers because I've owned them and liked them.

Another option is become a subscriber on AK and you have access to bartertown classifieds. People are often selling receivers and amps and may even be willing to ship for a reasonable price.
 
Gotcha, and to be clear, when I read, for example, 20 watts per channel on a receiver, that really means 20 watts per channel? And that won't power my speakers enough? I have read that some old receivers will put out more than their specs state

I love Boston Acoustics speakers (I have...19 of them from their slightly later VR and CR series - more than 2 full surround systems worth). In my experience, I have had the best luck pairing them with Nakamichi and Kenwood gear. I've run my assortment of BAs with my Nakamichi RE-2 receiver (55 w/ch), PA-5 power amp (100 w/ch), Kenwood KR-5600 receiver (40 w/ch), and KR-5030 receiver (60 w/ch) all to good results. The Nakamichis do the best for imagining and detail, but if you want to go 70s, the Kenwoods do great as well. In my experience, it doesn't take much more than a few watts to get the Bostons crazy loud in a moderately sized space.

very likely worth the list price, very few if any, used ones around, a good sign.

As the owner of an Outlaw receiver I completely agree. Best bang for the buck in new audio equipment imho.
 
the Bostons are good enough to survive many an upgrade in electronics, so the better the equipment you run them with, the more you will enjoy them.
