Receiver with pre outs /want to use seperate preamp (sometimes) ?s

So here is the Deal

I have a Pioneer VSX-D1S that has pre out /jumpers

I most want to use the pre amp on the pioneer (most of the time) but I also have my computer hooked up to my Yamaha C-60 preamp and when I am using that I would like to use it / bypassing the pioneers preamp.

So here is my questions ... could someone just use a couple rca y splitter cables hooking one y to the pioneers preamp and the other to the c-60 and then the other end of the y to the amp section...or would that damage the equipment / ruin the SQ?

assuming doing it with a a y-cable would be bad I assume just a simple RCA a/b switch would work?

anyway thank you in advance sorry if it seems like a dumb question in anyway but I honestly do not know how to do this safely / properly so I'm asking.

Cheers.

I think you'd be better off with a switch. At a minimum, with a y-adapter setup, you'd still be getting whatever residual noise comes from the Pioneer preamp, and you'd certainly run the risk of ground issues and hum.

You can split the preamp out and send it to two power amp inputs without any problems. I've done it in the past and a lot of subwoofers are connected in this manner.

As for the other way around, therare issues there. Those "Y" connectors are called "splitters", not "combiners". You would want a switch

Sure, but in this case it's the opposite; paralleling two outputs into one input.

Never a recommended practice. Use a switcher.

Could you not run the Yamaha pre into the line input on the D1S and just use it in Direct mode?

BTW I have a D1S and love it (except for the phono pre)!

hi...so unless i'm dumb the C-60 dosn't have a direct mode (bypassing it's preamp...I could have I guess hooked one of the tape outputs to one of the inputs on the D1S i guess.

I ended up getting a little RCA A/B switch at radioshack for $18~ seems to do the trick ok for now.

I love my D1S very much I have it hooked up to a very nice pair of DCM Timeframe TF-250's and i think it sound just fantastic indeed.. problem is living in a condo now I can't really turn it up much as I don't wish to incite the anger of the HOA or whatnot..

here is my D1S $40 well spent I think.

Not sure about the C-60, but the VSX-D1S does have direct mode (which I see you have engaged in the pic above). From what I know, with that engaged, all preamp function aside from volume are bypassed. If you ran the C-60 pre-out into a line input on your D1S, you would be using the C-60 as preamp and D1S as power amp.

Can anyone confirm this would work?

This is how I run my tube phono pre.

Good score on the D1S. Any hum?

I plugged my Fisher tube pre amp in without any negative effects. I have had a D1s for years and as I wait for a better power amp option in possibly both tube and solid state this is an option. I never thought of using this as a power amp but after some reading in the manual it said its possible and now I can enjoy 130 watts of power with a tube preamp instead of using my 35 wpc tube receiver. kinda best of both worlds until I can do it proper.
