Recent finds in resale stores

20240306_160320~2.jpgI found these at two different local thrift stores but didnt buy them since the prices werent really set for a bargain hunter. The Sansui SP-X7900s above were in great shape but $250. for the pair seemed exorbitant for 30 - 40 year old speakers. They did really look cool with the 5 way speaker system though. The Technics SB-X90S below were in slightly rougher shape and I forgot how much they wanted but it was above my thrifty budget. I was however drawn to check them out as my stereo nostalgia meter rose a level or two. I visit thrift stores on occasion but usually the coolest vintage speakers I see are some Panasonic thrusters and even then its just one speaker.

I see you've barely posted since you joined in 2017 ago and this is your first post in 7yr's, AK already has a long running dedicated thread for Thrift store finds.

Maybe have a Moderator move this post there so you can share your finds with other like minded folks

Ya, I have a similar pair of Technics speakers I use in my garage. Not worth picking up. Mine were given to me by my neighbor. He does home restoration work and found them left behind in a house he was working one. They aren't horrible, but nothing special either. I would have expected better bass out of 12" woofers.

Smart to leave them behind.

Both look to be leftovers from a late 80's to mid 90's rack system, neither should impress you.
I agree for the most par but Ive seen the Sansui's go for crazy money on e-bay on occasion, For me its rare to see a pair in such good shape in person but I know Id just fry the tweeters or crossovers and ruin them for some crazy Sansui person, lol. If I were going to spend any good amount Id buy something new instead with better power handling like the JBL PA speakers I purchased a couple years ago. Ive found antique speakers are like antique cars, theyre cool to see but you have to baby them.

Sometimes old woofers just get tired. I bought a similar pair new for my daughter for Christmas back in the early 90s but they only had 10" woofers but they had good bass with the Pioneer 100wpc reciever I bought her to go with it. These Technics in my post had 15's but Id think theyre too tired too. In the past Ive bought old speaker systems more or less just for the cabinets and then replaced the speaker components with new but I prefer to get them cheap to do that.
