It can be vintage, it can be a integrated or even a receiver... there are so many and I Have heard Yamaha as mentioned as being reliable but not the best sounding but I know that had some good ones.

I am currently running a NAD setup but I may have to simplify more .

I use mainly streaming from my smart Sony TV with a little cd playing but mostly streaming.

I almost bought a Yamaha streamer but I read it was buggy or something.

I was going to buy a RX-V890 local but I think it sold. there are so many yamaha units its unreal.

ive had the RX-v1 the RX-v2095 and a few other of the RX-V series. I see they are a great bargain still....lol...unreal actually.

The RX-Z1 is even reasonable now.

I bought a Yamaha RX-V2095 on ebay for $80 plus shipping. thats insane.

EDIT: then I searched and found I had already bought this local once for $100...even better deal...

I think that because there are so many great vintage Yamaha options, it is hard to answer your questions. The general consensus here is that almost all vintage Yamaha gear sounds "good". You will need to be a bit more specific regarding what you are looking for in terms of features, what your listening is like (live concert levels or casual background music), etc.

Features? well...id like it to have optical for simplicity but that is not mandatory. it can be older vintage. it needs to sound good. I like NAD gear because it has full warm sound not too much treble...it needs to have preouts because I usually run a separate amp but here lately I have had to slim down so if I end up having to sell my power amps I need to have something with its own internal power.

its purely for 2.1 audio. not worried about video or surround sound for that matter.

Agree with these last two, CA-1000, 1010, 2010

But there is also lots of good black units which I don't like as much due to difficulty seeing them properly. The C-4 preamp is great but one would want to be using turntables, it as inputs for three

I have a CA-1000 and a CR-1020.
the CA-1000 takes a slight lead on the sound quality, especially in Class A operation

in addition, it can keep your coffee warm...!

Yamaha A-1....

Whatever you choose be aware that while Yamaha made a lot of very good home theater amps & receivers (RX-Vxxx etc) they tend to have limited channel separation in 2-channel mode when compared to a true 2-channel amp. This means that soundstage and presence will suffer in comparison.

Hint: Go separate 2-channel pre & power amps if you are really serious. Go integrated amp over receiver if you are just serious. :)

Cheers,
James

No matter what you choose, Yamaha is one that survives the test of time.

Some great suggestions to date. Just take your time and it will pay off.

Didn't see a budget, but IMO for new/slightly used, it would be hard to beat the A-S1000/1100/1200 or higher series. The 1100/1200 have meters too! I've had an A-S1000 for quite a few years now. I've replaced it in the audio rack with a tube integrated, but it would make zero sense to sell it since it would fetch less than it's worth to me. I guess one of my kids will own it in 10-15 years, I'm 73yo. If the tube int. ever dies, the Yamaha will go right back into the audio rack. It works very well with my Salk speakers.

I owned an RX-V3900 for a few years, probably the most powerful AVR I've ever owned. I have the RX-A2070 AVR now, sounds pretty good driving the HT setup, consisting of Klipsch RP speakers L/R & center & Atmos, Emotiva ERD-1 surrounds. These two systems do not share!
