Hello, everyone. I've been lurking on audio forums for a couple years now, however this is my first post (in any forum, ever). Please feel free to correct or criticize any mistakes in posting etiquette that I might be making. No offense will be taken.
That said, I am trying to build a vintage system around a recently acquired Marantz 2235b receiver. I got the receiver very cheap and it works and sounds good, however I will be taking it in to a local HiFi shop to have it serviced soon, in the hope that I can milk it for the best sound possible. My goal is to build a HiFi period system that will allow me to listen to LPs the way one might have heard them straight out of 1977.
After getting the 2235b serviced, I will be in the market for a TT, and I'd like to keep under the $500 range. The Marantz 6100 falls into my price range and I like the idea of synergy between components from the same manufacturer. It has become clear, however, that I may be paying quite a bit just for the Marantz name, and perhaps I can get something much better in that price range. Other TTs I'm considering are the AR XA, Elac Miracord 50h or a Dual 701.
Any thoughts or opinions about about the 6100 as it compares to other TTs of that era? Any recommendations for other TTs that might work well with the 2235b? I would be willing to go back as far as the late 1960s, to get the sound I'm looking for.
Additionally, I am looking at Polk Audio Monitor 7s as a good speaker to go for. Any thoughts on these? Or recommendations for vintage speakers in the $200 - $300 range? I realize this is highly dependent upon what I can find in my area, but a general idea of what to look for would be appreciated.
Many thanks.
