Recommendations on digital amplifier replacement for HK430 receiver

Good morning everyone,

After a couple of months tinkering with a HK430 that has a blown Left Channel output, I'm thinking that perhaps the best route would be to replace the existing amp board with a class D digital amplifier and be done with it. Has anyone tried such a project? I'd be curious to hear comments on the good/bad and what to expect.

Just my opinion. I think you should repair ( or have repaired) the HK as is. If you want to go class D, that's fine. My thought is the HK is a nice piece with obtainable replacement parts and wouldn't put up much of a fight from a tech.

The power supply voltages in your HK430 (+/- 28.5v) would be ideal for the LM3886 class A/B chip. Tons of info out there on this chip due to its popularity in the gainclone amps. Unfortunately those chips are tough to come by these days.

You could remove the amp board and always return to stock once you diagnose the issue.
 
Since there is no requirement that the amp modules meet FCC requirements, it is likely that any digital amp you buy will cause rf interference and screw up your FM reception. Fix the HK. If you need help, start a thread on it.
 
I've built 3 amps with digital boards in the last year. First, they do not bother FM, at least mine don't. Secondly, my amps require a fairly heavy duty DC power supply. some need about 6 amps (nice to have headroom), another needed 12 amps. The last one I built involved a Mean Well 12.5 amp, 24 volt power supply.

On a side note, might I suggest you buy an amp (of your choice) and remove the power from your amp boards. Then you can use your receiver as a preamp/tuner and have it drive a separate amp. If your receiver doesn't have pre out/amp in RCA jacks, you could reroute the inputs to the amp boards from the preamp section to some added RCA jacks. The next time my Outlaw RR2150 has an amp problem, its going to become a preceiver. I have already found out how to remove power to the amp section. Everything else will work.
