Recommended Cleaning Method - Sherwood S-7100A Volume Pot

Just a quick update...

I cleaned the input selector switch, speaker selector switch and the bass, treble and balance pots today with Deoxit D5. That removed all hints of scratchiness from all the controls.

However, I still have one remaining problem. The speaker selector switch works fine in the A and B positions, but when I switch it to A+B, I don't get any sound out of either pair of speakers. Is there a separate fuse I should look for for the A+B outputs?

BTW, I'm listening to Flight of the Cosmic Hippo by Bela Fleck and the Flecktones with the little Sherwood driving a pair of Electro-Voice Interface D speakers. Even at less than half volume, there is enough bass to literally shake the walls, rattle the windows, rattle my glassware in the kitchen cabinets and glass shelves in the downstairs bathroom.

Do you have two sets of speakers connected?

This is probably putting the speakers in series. If you only have one set of speakers connected, there is no connection.

You mention two sets of speakers.. another brand?

Perhaps they are incompatible (a+b)? The link describes that the electrovoice d' speakers have speaker protection to the tweeter? The user manual for the 7100a describes amp protection to protect output transistors. Amp can take 4-16ohms but wonder if mixed ohms kicks in protect? out of phase per user manual??

Nailed it. The receiver puts the A and B speakers in series. I was originally testing with one pair of smaller Boston Acoustics HD8 speakers on my test bench, moving them between the A and B connections. I just hooked the HD8s up in series with the Interface Ds and I now get sound out of both pairs.

97 dB at one meter at 1 watt. Rated down to 18Hz at -2.5 db, flat down to 28 Hz with the recommended EQ.

They come with the following warning label on the back of each speaker:

And they aren't kidding. With a larger amp, they are the closest thing I've heard (and felt) to live concert levels in my home.

But the real beauty of them is they sound absolutely wonderful at lower listening levels. Because they are very efficient, a lot of folks run them with low powered tube amps. Prior to hooking up the little Sherwood, I was running them with a Pioneer SX-737. Again, due to the high efficiency, they sound great with lower powered vintage receivers.

MCM... yeah read the link couple times. Pretty amazing! This amps specs and design w/speaker matching of the d's dispels amp wattage myth that more watts = more output versus what a pair of high db efficient speakers does with 1 watt.

WOW! I just looked up those Electro Voice speakers... incredible! And going for big bucks these days!! I'll add them to my "completely unobtainable but fun to daydream" list
