RECONE Renkus / Electrovoice

I have two 15" woofers (mid-woofers) one Renkus and one EV.
The Renkus is SSL 15-1 and it seems like the EVM 15L is the same. Now I have a EV DL15X lying around as well.

The basket is the same, the depth in magnet for voice coil same, it's not much difference between the size of magnet, size of spider is the same ... I can pluck around the the voice coils and they fit as well as the cone from Renkus fit in EV. The difference is the height of winding and the height of voice coil and that the EV DL15X has a pole piece that is a tad bit higher over the magnet.

So would I be able to use the recone kit for either EVM 15L or DL15X in both?

I had the EVM 15L and would like to have something simliar again. I will see what I choose - it depends on price for recone kits. The EVM 15L should give me a higher upper range which I'm searching for more than a good low end. In that case I think the voice coil lean more towards the measurents of the Renkus.

I see those Renkus woofers for sale from time to time. I’ve been tempted to buy a pair. I’m not sure which EV woofers they actually are.

When I’ve used EV 15L and 15B in the past I preferred the 15B. But I was crossing them at 800hz and didn’t need any more upper range than that.

Aker GordonW might have the info you need on these Renkus woofers. He’s the only one I can think of who has probably reconed a pair on this site.

Elitopus is correct, @GordonW may have an answer. He arguably has more know-how with driver restoration than most on this forum.

Upper range well, I will not use them as high as 6000 hz but depending on tweeter it is good to have a bit more than 1000-1800 hz to stretch with. I'm looking at crossing them at 3000 hz and I will not use them as fullrange so I don't need them to go deep - but high. I tend to split at 2500/3000 hz in two-way, I think below creates a bit off a strange sound picture. Depends on drivers. Adding bass support arround 180-200 hz.

The EV15L is a good choice for this. It has good on-axis response, with a pretty well-behaved breakup mode behavior, up to 5KHz. You will want to tame down the rising response above about 2500Hz- but that's not too hard (just use a low-Q lowpass, with a bit of a "gap" between the woofer and tweeter electrical crossover point, and/or use a parallel L-R "step network" to lower the output above 2.5KHz, a couple dB).

Wow up to 5khz? That’s crazy. I knew they went high, but didn’t know they went that high. It’s impressive

Not if you have a driver that can handle it. But in generally yes epescially woofers now days that are designed to have a useable frequency say from 44-1000 hz where you can strecth it higher to like 1200 but at that crossing you need to build a 3-way or use a super expensive HF driver that can handle the power at that low crossing point. Active speakers today crosses at 1800 more or less from what I've seen, 15" models. Not really my cup of tea. Even smaller drivers are kinda off, tried to find 6,5" drivers for my Polk LS but deep and high is not really what you find today, same goes for the US made Cerwin Vega woofers that goes low and roll off at 2500 hz. You don´t really find that too often.

Thanks Gordon for your valuable input! Just what I thought that EV15L would be a better choice. Good you comment again, I think I will be on the right track with the 15L kit considering what my goal is.
