Reconing JBL L116

Excited to get my newly acquired JBL L116 speakers working I purchased a recone kit online the other day. I successfully cleaned off of the rubber surrounds and cut ito the dust cap. Being the first time doing this I didn't pay attention to how deep the voice coil goes in to magnet. Any body know how deep it suppose to go in? I read something about the 122A woofer has a gap of 0.053" or about 1.35mm but don't quite understand what that means. I also have the original woofer and it has a metal ring am I supposed to glue that on to the new woofer?
Super new to this dyi speaker repair and appreciate any guidance you guys may have. Thanks

I'm confused by your questions and description . You mention a new woofer? Are you reconing, or just replacing foam surrounds? Here is a link to a video on reconing. Is this the process you are using? Take a look at it and learn the terminology

It might be easier to help if you posted some pics of the work in progress. I've got a set L112s...not familiar with L116s.

Yes I got a recone kit from simply speakers. The process looks pretty much the same but voice coil isn't preglued to the cone like in that video. I put the shims in the gap then when I put the voice coil in it drops all the way in. Wasn't sure the height of it is suppose to go in. In regards to the old cone there is a metal ring around it. Am I suppose to reuse that since the new cone didn't come with one.

Ok I will post pics when I get a chance tomorrow

I now understand your issue...this may help:

Regarding the metal ring...since I'm not familiar with that woofer, and could not find any info about JBL L116 on the interweb, I don't have an answer. I can't recall ever seeing a metal ring attached to the cone of a woofer. Or do you mean it is a trim ring around the outer edge of the basket? If so, it is cosmetic, rather than functional. But if you are referring to a metal ring on the coil, I know that some JBL woofers have a mass ring added to the coil...in which case I assume you would put it on the new coil.

Edit: perhaps you mean that you have JBL L166s? If so, there is a lot of info out there about the 122A and 122A-1 woofers used in them. Perhaps JBL Pro Services would be able to provide the info you need for proper coil height (http://www.jblproservice.com).

Also, if you really do have L166s, you will probably get better responses by starting a new thread with a title like "JBL 122A/122A-1 Woofer Reconing Questions".
