I recently scored a Pioneer PL-A35 TT at the local flea market, about 2 weeks ago. Since then, I have amassed a ton of LP's (probably 40 right now with 40 more on the way). I mentioned to a couple of guys at work that I was getting into it and one guy brought me in his old collection (for free, though I'm going to give him something for them) that was sitting in his closet, probably 60 + LP's, many he claims have never been used. Plus a stack of 45's. Good stuff,too, 60's, 70's and 80's rock/pop. I also scored 14 at a flea market for $2 a piece. It seemed like once I got a TT the records started coming out of the woodwork. :scratch2: I was just wondering if this is how it usually works, or is this unusual? Seems like a lot of people around here are sitting on record collections.

I work at a country club and got the word out that I am into vinyl and vintage audio. So far, about 400 records and a set of speakers were given to me with a r2r and receiver on the way. Free of course :thmbsp:
 
I bring home literally dozens of cool LPs every month, and most cost no more than $1 each. After a while you learn how to sniff 'em out!

Thats great. Enjoy. It amazing how much stuff I have picked up in the last year. Its out there. Keep your eyes open and you'll get a bunch of stuff--a lot of it free! have fun..One of these days I am going to break out mine and fix it up. No rush as I have four Duals wtih another on the way. I need to make some stuff go away. Too much equipment again! have fun with all those LPs

I've had about 20~30 folks give me free records in the past few years. Word gets out that you're the local "record guy", and the phone rings as records start finding you. I call them "landfill rescue missions." I've had just as many folks call looking to sell records. Some of those have been awesome scores for little money.

Some of my better (free) scores:

1,200 Classical LPs from a radio station
300 Pop/Hillbilly/Jazz 78s
250 Rock/Pop/Metal LPs
170 Reel To Reel Tapes (91 pre-recorded Pop/Rock/Classical)

Start passing out business cards if you really want start finding a lot of records. :thmbsp:
 
went last friday to view a collection of 197 boxes or pretty close to 9,000 lp's. I was disappointed to find most were moldy and musty to top it off after a full inspection there absoletely zero worth buying. You figure the law of averages you'd find something but no
 
Glad that my story is not unique. I am still surprised at how many LP's I see at yard sales and flea markets. And I think the more people I talk to, the more records will be coming my way. I think most people are glad to pass their old stuff on to someone that will enjoy them. I know I would, I've given tons of stuff away over the years like that. AudioKarma at work, I suppose.:thmbsp:
 
Records are out there!

G'day all, as I detailed in another recent thread, early in the week after being told about two (new to me) charity stores selling records, I came away with twelve or so albums (including a Luciano Pavarotti two album set) for mostly A$2 each. :thmbsp: Regards, Felix aka catman.
 
Humm...I work part time at a small town hardware store. Many older gentlemen come in to get their bolts and screws and such and sometimes I have a reel to reel or a TT torn apart on the bench there. That usually opens the conversation. Quite a few say, "hey, I got one of those in my barn" or some such place. I have revived several rtr for customers. On my own time that is. I got some nice records too. But I do like the idea to make up some cards and pass them out.

On a side note. There is a large old building across the street that is stuffed full of things gathered over 40 years. Now the owner is slowly clearing out the junk he says. I talked to him about him keeping hi eye out for old audio equipment and that I would actually buy it from him. Lots of what is in there he doesn't even know anymore. So I am in hopes of some scores from there.
 
Yes, it pays to advertise! It's gotten to the point my wife threatens our friends if they mention to others that I collect records.

There's good news and bad news. I've gotten a lot of great records just from word of mouth. I've also seen far more Lawrence Welk and Bad Hair Gospel records than anyone should be made to see.

I had an opportunity to purchase what seemed like the entire Barry Manilow collection on LP.

I passed.
