Record Store Buying: Do you try to impress the staff with your purchases?

Impress the staff??

At 60 years of age I could care less what they think. It's my $$ and my choice what I want to buy. Anyway, their taste in music may really suck compared to mine!

My local record store is one of the top indie stores in the country carrying both new and vintage vinyl. Tattoo's up the wazoo, hair, over sized earrings, and of course everyone wears black. The place leans toward grunge and metal with a super healthy dose of everything else. It's a huge store complete with stage for live music. I'm 60, they're not. I'm in there every week for something or other. New and old.

The last couple of times I came in they impressed the hell out of me . They see me and start playing either something I've recently bought, something I've talked about with them, or something similar that they figure I might buy. That's pretty cool.

And we're talking new music like Allah-las, Nothing, Lana Del Rey, The Ravonettes. Muse, M.I.A., etc.

They know what's on my current wish list and will put the stuff aside for me as it comes in. An original Doors S/T (Mon), and the new Joe Bonamassa.

They even exchanged a reissue "Sticky Fingers" for me for what was supposed to be an original after I checked it out at home.

Beside being extremely knowledgeable, they are extremely helpful. That's what impresses, and that's why they get my business.

They would tell you knowledgeable customers impress them.

I am not trying to impress anyone with my selections. I do hope that what I bring to the counter might start a conversation.

The ideal music experience to me, is listening to something I think is cool, and another person feeling the same, and we start suggesting some other cool stuff back and forth.

My taste is varied, and not too far out there.

I just want to start a conversation about music with anyone in the store who might be so inclined.

Sometimes I buy and walk out without much of any interaction beyond "that will be $46.15" and "thanks", but other times, I have had fun talking for several minutes.

I just love seeing late teens and 20 somethings, with vinyl under their arms headed home to play it.

The only "record store" I ever visit is a second hand store 10 miles or so away. Really helpful, young guy runs it. I think I confuse him more than impress. Last visit I picked up a Todd Rundgren LP, Smell of Female by the Cramps & the Stylistics Greatest Hits. My tastes are fairly eclectic :nerd:
