Recording Level Issues

My equipment is a Teac XR7 reel, McIntosh C2700 rep amp and an AR XA TT with Ortofon MC20. Since purchasing my new amp and pre-amp, I am re-recording some reels. For some reason, i have to turn the Line all the way to the max when recording off the TT. For the heck of it, I tried recording from streaming and CD’s and only had to set Line at 50 to 60% max. My trim on the c2700 is at the max +6db.

Any insight?

Do you have your turntable connected to the phono input of your preamp? If so, are using a LOMC cartridge but the MM input? When listening to your turntable, is the volume through your system usually about the same as other sources when the volume knob is rotated to the same setting?

Use the Moving Coil Phono input. The MC20 is a moving coil. Nice cartridge. I have the MC20 Super.

I have the TT connected to the MC inputs. The volume is the same as the other sources but when going thru to the tape deck, the other sources are much stronger.

Yes absolutely. My uncle had it brand new old stock. I am the only user. I have the jewel case and everything. It sounds fab from the TT but cant understand why i have to record at the highest level just with the TT. Does not make sense.

Plus i just make it to the peak recording level

Do you have the trim set for the additioal +6dB of gain on all the inputs? After glancing at the manual, it appears it's individually adjustable per input. Set it to 0dB for the streamer and CD, and leave it at +6dB for the turntable, maybe? Manual says 60dB of voltage gain from MC input to recording output, which should be plenty. Are you using digital inouts for the streamer and CD? If so, have you checked the digital gain settings? They're adjustable on that pre, too.

I understand the settings by source which is great. I just tried adding th MCA 76 transformer just to see and it is too much. I have an email into McIntosh to get there thoughts. Thanks

I see the 60db gain which is enough as the MCA 76 amplifier provides 34db.
