Recording on a Reel To Reel

Quick question does the age of a tape have anything to do with the sound quality when recording? I was just wondering because some folks on ebay are selling sealed reel-to-reel tapes and does the quality deteriorate with age? Also anyone ever hear of a brand called Stanford Tape?
