a question for pustelniakr and you other really smart guys in the know--

when making vinyl to tape rec's on the newly pustelniakr'd pioneer ct-f950, i have been using new maxell xl II high bias cassettes. on the label, it says 'ideal for cd' and elsewhere, 'position iec type II-high'--

ok, boil this down to simple, shrinkboy steps-- where should i set the bias dial on my machine to make good tapes?

It should be in the "Chrome" or i think it's marked CrO2 on that deck.Peace,Keith H.

Send me an email (you remember the address, if not PM me). I will have to look in the user's manual for how to set the bias. It is eesentially set so that the output from the tape is equal to the input to the tape. However, it is not as easy to set as the CT-F1000, which provides the necessary test tone. If I am not mistaken, you can input a 1Khz test tone, and adjust the bias control until the levels are the same when you switch from line to tape (input to output). As you know, you can listen to the input signal, or the signal coming from the tape. You adjust the bias till they match.

I cal'd the unit, using that type of tape, for high bias. If you leave the bias knob at it's detented center position, you should be well within reason.

Email me as a reminder, and I'll check the manual to be sure...

thanx, rich. i actually have a copy of the OM, but was hoping that somebody such as yerself who's done of lot of recording could toss out some easy tips. and i also needed to know where to set the control for tape type.

so, the idea is to switch back and forth between source and tape on the monitor switch and crank on the bias switch until i am getting matching output levels? ok, i'll give that a whirl.....

What I would do is exactly what the manual says to do with the bias pot. The problem with just switching back and forth is that the output level control is a wildcard. The real way (generic bias setting method) is as follows: Then record a 1Khz tone, and set it to a -20db level while watching the input signal. Then switch to watch the output signal, and set the output level control so that the level is -20db. Then record a 10kHz tone, watch the output signal, and adjust the bias pot till the output signal is -20db (-3db to +0db).

I don't know if the procedure is what Pioneer specifies for the CT-F950.
