I am experiencing a recording problem with a Pioneer CT-F950 tape deck. The recorded level on the left channel is significantly less (about half) than the recorded level on the right channel. Obviously I can compensate for this with the input level control, but I would prefer to fix the problem. With the help of AK member, AudioWizard, I was able to trace the problem to the point in the circuit where the record signal is mixed with the bias signal. We suspected the bias circuit was the problem. After checking some of the components in the bias circuit, I decided to swap the Left record head for the Right. The problem reversed and we concluded that the record head was bad...I put the project on hold.
Several months later, I explained the problem to a tape deck expert and he thought it was a bad capacitor somewhere.
How could it be a bad capacitor if swapping the Left for Right record head reversed the problem? Doesn't this demonstration conclude the head is bad? Or, perhaps, one of the head lead wires to the head is bad. Does anyone have an opinion or advice? Thanks.
