There is a story in our local newspaper today that states turntables are making a big comeback. They claim that more turntables were sold last year than in 1984 which was CD's first big year. They also have a quote from a manager at Virgin records in the UK who states that vinyll outsells CD's 80% - 20% in their store!! I guess now that the word is out it'll be hard to find a great turntable bargain

I find that extremely difficult to believe. Turntables may be making a comeback, but more than '84?!

A January 4, 2006 article in USA TODAY quotes Sondscan with the following figure: 618.9 million CD's sold; 352.7 million digital track downloads.

Now, there is no question vinyl is making a comeback, but check out these sales figures: Vinyl sales up 87% - 7" Vinyl has now had the best 12 month sales period since 1998. In just the twelve months up to March 31st 2005, 7" vinyl sales have reached 1.38 million (ITV.com, 7/12/2005).

I have been to a number of Virgin stores in the UK and the vinyl section is barely 1/10 the size of the CD section. Sounds like a manager is pulling someone's leg.

Just from watching a few movies, it sure looks like vinyl hung on in the U.K. a lot better than it did here. You often see Turntables in English movies. Not sure about the stats, but who knows.

Take care,

Ed

I think a key piece of information got lost somewhere with this story. I have seen elsewhere that, at least in some markets, sales of vinyl singles has outpaced CD singles. For full album sales it's not even close. Although I do believe that vinyl is also outselling SACD now.

Our local paper (Newcastle, Australia) had a story on the weekend about more turntables were sold last year than CD players.

Now, maybe a 'cd player' doesn't mean a DVD or PC cd-drive.......... maybe standalone CD players dont get many sales because dvd and PC's can play Cd's. Still, vinyl is definately going to make a bit of a comeback.

vinyl never died in the uk...too many dj's love black plastic over here...very rare to go to any club and see a 'cd' dj...
its still a very popular format in the uk....mp3 kinda killed the cd dominance in the uk...and most of the younger generation are beginning to appreciate a 'tangible' format...
records are still 'cool' in the uk...if the prices are anything to go by...
